If you need emergency services and your 911 call fails call the Sheriff’s Office general line at 920-294-4000. 911 service was also out briefly on August 31st in Green Lake County.
Juneau Man Pleads To Child Porn Charges
A 19-year-old Juneau man Tuesday pled guilty to three counts of possession of child pornography. Additional similar charges were read into the record for purposes of sentencing consideration. Last November the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office got a tip that images of child porn were uploaded and accessed in an online file. When reviewing the tip, a Detective made the connection that the email address that was included in the tip was the same email address that was provided on an application to become a jailer at the County Jail. The Detective, under a guise of setting up a job interview, was able to confirm the information was accurate with the owner of the email account, Jeremy Slayton. A presentence investigation was ordered for Slayton. A sentencing hearing was scheduled for November 14th.
FDL Man Captured After Jumping From Second Floor Balcony
An 18-year-old Fond du Lac man wanted on a probation and parole warrant tried to flee from Fond du Lac Police officers Saturday by leaping from a second floor balcony. Police learned a location where Devin Schmitz was staying but Schmitz spotted them and attempted to get away by jumping off the balcony. Officers were able to take Schmitz into custody. He was wanted on the warrant for fleeing an officer, second degree recklessly endangering safety, and vehicle theft charges. He was taken to the Fond du Lac County Jail.
Waupun Fire Chief Leaving For County Job
Waupun Fire Chief B.J. DeMaa is resigning to take another position with Fond du Lac County. DeMaa, who is also Waupun’s director of emergency management, will become Fond du Lac County Communications and Emergency Management Director. DeMaa has been Waupun’s Fire Chief since 2014. Waupun Mayor Rohn Bishop commended DeMaa for the work he has done for the city. DeMaa’s last day with the city is October 2nd. Waupun will begin a search for a new fire chief and director of emergency management.
Four FDL School Administrators Resign
During a special school board meeting Tuesday night the Fond du Lac School Board accepted the resignations of four top administrators. Following a closed session the board appointed interim replacements. Fond du Lac Schools Superintendent Jeremy Fleig says the timing of the resignations was coincidental and not part of a coordinated effort. Resigning in late August were Director of Human Resources Stacey Bramstedt; Director of Pupil Services Katie Moder; Evans Elementary School Principal Amy Rettler; and the district communications director, Nicole Noonan. Bramstedt, Moder, and Rettler left to take other jobs. Noonan will be attending graduate school.
UWO Protest
About two dozen people protested around the UW-Oshkosh campus Tuesday calling for administrators to reconsider plans to outsource about 100 jobs. Among the protestors were professors, staff and students. The UWO is proposing to outsource custodial and ground services to a Tennessee-based company called SSC. University officials issued a written statement saying the move is being considered due to staffing shortages and that all employees would be offered jobs with the new company, receiving higher pay and a sign-on bonus. But UWO employees who work as custodians and groundskeepers are worried about their job security and state benefits package if administrators go ahead with the change. If the change is made those employees would no longer have access to the Wisconsin Retirement System.
Hydrant Flushing In Ripon
The Ripon Water Utility is flushing fire hydrants. The process began Tuesday and will be conducted from 8 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday of each week through the end of October. The flushing can potentially cause some discolored water as sediments are flushed from the water main. If you experience that, run cold water only until water runs clear. Residents may also experience slightly lower than normal pressures during this operation as water flows through the hydrant. Contact the Ripon Water Utility at 920-748-4900 if the water does not clear up after 30 minutes.
Uniform Death Reporting
One of the study committees State Senator Joan Ballweg is serving on is an outgrowth of her chairing of the state’s Suicide Prevention Task Force. She says it has to do with Uniform Death Reporting. The state lawmaker from Markesan says it has nothing to do with whether a county has a medical examiner or coroner but rather how information on a death is reported. She says a universal format for reporting deaths would help prevention efforts in the way they target certain causes of death. She says it may require some training on using the right format so the data can be accurately evaluated.
COVID Impacts Life Expectancy
COVID-19 has definitely had an impact on the length of our lives over the past three years. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker formerly of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force notes according to a study the life expectancy in the United States has declined from 79 years in 2019 to 76 years in past year. He says some of that can be attributed to COVID, but also due to drug overdoses and mental health issues which picked up during the pandemic lockdown. He says normally gains or declines in length of life expectancy are measured in terms of weeks and months not years. He says the decline over the past two years is the biggest decline in 100 years.
Watson Street Car Show
The 23rd Annual Watson Street Car Show will be held during Septemberfest in Downtown Ripon on Saturday, September 17th. Howard Stibb is one of the organizers he says last year 220 classic cars participated. Unlike other car shows they have nine judges in groups of three that judge the different classes of cars and pick the best three in each class. To make things fair the top three each get “Best of Class” plaques which include a picture of their car. They have a separate set of judges for the “Best of Show.” Stibb says their other nine judges have enough to do during the car show and should have some time available to enjoy Septemberfest as well. The Car Show runs from 8 am to 3 pm that Saturday.
