Sports for September 6th

From Wayne Mausser.

Victor Caratini hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning for the Milwaukee Brewers, helping Craig Counsell earn managerial win No. 600 in a 6-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Monday.

Counsell reached the milestone in roller-coaster fashion, with his team trailing 3-0 after the first inning, rallying and then escaping a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the eighth. He became the winningest manager in franchise history earlier this season.

Caratini provided the big blow by lining a slider from reliever Justin Lawrence over the fence in right-center. It was Caratini’s ninth homer of the season.

The Brewers are trying to make a late push for their fifth straight postseason appearance. They currently trail Philadelphia by two games for the final NL wild-card spot.

Adrian Houser (5-9) got the start over Freddy Peralta, who was given a few more days to rest a tired shoulder. It was a rough opening inning for Houser. He took a liner from leadoff hitter Ryan McMahon off his leg on the third pitch. The right-hander tossed some warmup pitches, but couldn’t find his rhythm as he spotted Colorado a 3-0 lead. After that, he settled in. Houser allowed three runs, one earned, and two hits over five innings.

He was helped out by a four-run sixth inning, with Jace Peterson tying the game on a sacrifice fly. It set the stage for Caratini, who hit his first homer since Aug. 4.

But it wouldn’t be smooth sailing to the finish. C.J. Cron homered in the eighth to make it 6-4. The Rockies loaded the bases before Devin Williams got pinch-hitter Elias Díaz to ground out.

Williams pitched around a walk to open the ninth as he earned his 10th save.  Ryan Feltner (2-7) took the loss for Colorado, surrendering four runs and five hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Meanwhile, OF Christian Yelich finished 1 for 5 in his return to the lineup. Yelich missed the last three games with neck discomfort. Wily Peralta’s confident his shoulder will be ready for Thursday’s start. He spent quite a bit of time on the injured list earlier this season with a strained shoulder.

The Brewers will send righty Brandon Woodruff (9-4, 3.54 ERA) to the mound Tuesday. The Rockies will throw righty Chad Kuhl (6-8, 5.19).  First pitch is at 7:40 CDT and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Monday the Nationals shutout the Cardinals 6-0 and the Mets at Pittsburgh was postponed. The Cubs and the Reds had the day off.  The Brewers trail the Cardinals by 7 ½ games in the NL Central and are two games behind Philadelphia for the final NL wild-card spot.

The New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge is speeding toward Roger Maris’ AL-record 61 homers — and that might be just the start. Judge tied a Yanks mark for right-handed hitters with his 54th home run, putting him on pace for 65 for the season.

In the Midwest League tonight the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers host Beloit.  The first pitch is at 6:40.

After the weekend off, the Packers returned to practice Monday as they get ready for their season opener in Minnesota Sunday.  For the first time this season, Matt LaFleur said the hope was for David Bakhtiari to participate in team drills. And according to a report from ESPN, Bakhtiari says he is on track to start on Sunday.

Meanwhile, wide receiver Allen Lazard did not participate in practice for the second straight time. The team has not disclosed why, but LaFleur said, “Allen’s doing better, but we’ll see as the week progresses.” Lazard was the only player on the 53-man roster who did not practice Monday.

The Packers are off today.  Green Bay travels to Minnesota to open the season Sunday against the Vikings.

Wisconsin teammates John Torchio and Braelon Allen created a couple of truly memorable moments in an otherwise forgettable season-opening matchup.

Allen had  96 yard touchdown scamper for the longest run from scrimmage in program history and Torchio had the school’s longest interception return as the 18th-ranked Badgers trounced Championship Subdivision program Illinois State 38-0 on Saturday night.

The two record-setting touchdowns showcased Wisconsin’s big-play ability across its roster. Allen rushed for 148 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.

Quarterback Graham Mertz went 14 of 16 for 219 yards.

Torchio opened the scoring with a 100 yard interception return late in the first quarter after Illinois State had reached the red zone.

Wisconsin hosts Washington State on Saturday.

The Peter Jennings era got off to a great start with a 53-13 UW Oshkosh Titans win over East Texas Baptist University Saturday.  UW-Oshkosh’s quarterback Kobe Berghammer threw three touchdown passes and ran in a pair of TDs himself for five total scores on the day.  The Titans rank 19th in D3 football rankings.

Ripon College opened their season Saturday with a 13-10 win at home over St. Norbert’s. Ripon plays on the road at Cornell on Saturday.

In a race that had more twists and turns than a Victorian melodrama, Erik Jones put the vaunted No. 43 Chevrolet back in Victory Lane for the first time since 2014. In the season‘s first NASCAR Cup Series Playoff race, Jones held off Denny Hamlin in a 20-lap run to the finish to win the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway for the second time.

The Sunday night race took its toll on more than a handful of playoff drivers, as Jones became the first non-playoff driver to win the first postseason event since NASCAR introduced the elimination format in 2014.

The victory was Jones‘ first of the season, the third of his career, and the first for Petty GMS Racing since that organization was formed by merger before the 2022 campaign. The win was No. 200 for the 43 car number, which NASCAR Hall of Famer and car owner Richard Petty drove to seven series championships.

Tyler Reddick was third followed by Joey Logano and Christopher Bell to round out the top five.  Michael McDowell finished 6th followed by Brad Keselowski, William Byron, Bubba Wallace and Alex Bowman.

Frances Tiafoe’ss vision was blurry from the tears. He was thrilled — overwhelmed, even — when the last point was over and it hit him that, yes, he had ended Rafael Nadal ‘s 22-match Grand Slam-winning streak on Monday and reached the US Open quarterfinals for the first time.
