Tuesday Sports

The Brewers are back in action tonight at home against the Cardinals.  Milwaukee has its final nine games of the regular season at home and begins tonight with a two-game set against St. Louis. Then the Marlins visit American Family Field for a four-game series starting Thursday. The Brewers final three games of the season are against the Diamondbacks starting next Monday with the regular season ending Wednesday.

Milwaukee enters tonight’s game trailing the Phillies by 1 ½ games for the final Wild Card spot. The Brewers send right-hander Adrian Houser to the mound against fellow right-hander Miles Mikolas.  First pitch is at 6:40 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/93.1FM, WISS.

In the only game played in the NL Central Division Monday the Pirates beat the Reds 8-3.

The Packers are off today after winning 14-12 Sunday at Tampa Bay over the Buccaneers.  Left tackle David Bakhtiari was back in the starting against Tampa Bay and split time with Josh Nijman.   Coach Matt LaFleur said he thought Bakhtiari did a great job in his return. LaFleur says he and his coaching staff have discussed keeping Nijman on the field at right tackle and moving left guard Elgton Jenkins to right guard.  As for what went wrong with the offense after their first two scoring drives, he said it was a combination of a number of things including blocking, play calling and execution.  LaFleur also said wide receiver Romeo Doubs will get more targets because he’s earned that opportunity.

Cooper Rush started his second straight game since Zak Prescott went down with an injury and completed 21 of 31 passes for 215 yards and a crucial touchdown midway through the final quarter.  The Giants final drive ended when Daniel Jones was picked off Trevon Diggs.  Demarcus Lawrence led the Cowboys defense with three sacks. The Eagles lead the NFC East with a 3-0 record while the Cowboys and Giants are 2-1 and the Commanders are 1-2.

In Monday Night Football the Cowboys won on the road defeating the Giants 23-16.

Milwaukee Bucks forward Khris Middleton probably won’t be available for the beginning of the season after undergoing surgery on his left wrist this summer.

“Hopefully soon after that.” the three-time All-Star said Sunday at the Bucks’ Media Day event.

Middleton said he played through the wrist injury late last season before undergoing surgery. He was wearing a cast for much of the offseason before having it removed two weeks ago.

The injury isn’t related to the issue that ended Middleton’s 2021-22 playoff run early.

Middleton sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee during Game 2 of the Bucks’ first-round playoff series with the Chicago Bulls and didn’t play again, missing the entire Eastern Conference semifinal that Milwaukee lost in seven games to the Boston Celtics.

The loss to Boston ended Milwaukee’s bid for a second straight title and has provided plenty of motivation as the Bucks prepare for the upcoming season.

The Bucks return with virtually the same roster they had last year. That roster doesn’t currently include restricted free agent Jordan Nwora, but general manager Jon Horst said Sunday that “Jordan’s going to be with us” while adding that the Bucks are still working out final details with the 2020 second-round draft pick from Louisville.

The only players on Milwaukee’s training camp roster who weren’t part of the team at some point last season are rookies MarJon Beauchamp and AJ Green, Marques Bolden and veteran free-agent acquisition Joe Ingles.

Ingles won’t be ready for the start of the season as he recovers from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Ingles played 45 games in the 2021-22 season before hurting the knee in late January, knocking him out for the rest of that season.

Horst said Ingles could return as early as December but more realistically would make his Bucks’ debut in January.

One player who’s feeling better after an injury-riddled 2021-22 season is reserve guard George Hill, who dealt with neck and abdominal issues that limited him to 54 games. The 36-year-old Hill said he considered retirement but didn’t want to end his career with that kind of season.

Milwaukee’s injury list isn’t limited to the players.

Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer had replacement surgery on his right ankle 4 ½-5 ½ weeks ago and had a scooter next to him as he sat and spoke to reporters. He wasn’t sure how the injury might impact him as the Bucks begin their preseason schedule Saturday against the Memphis Grizzlies before heading to Abu Dhabi for exhibition games with the Atlanta Hawks on Oct. 6 and Oct. 8.

Meanwhle the Bucks have re-signed forward Jordan Nwora. Bucks general manager Jon Horst said Sunday that “Jordan’s going to be with us” and that the team was working out the final details of a deal with the restricted free agent. The signing was made official Monday.

Wisconsin tight end Clay Cundiff is unavailable indefinitely but hasn’t been ruled out for the season. Cundiff was carted off the field Saturday in the Badgers’ 52-21 loss to No. 3 Ohio State. In the injury report released Monday, Cundiff is listed as unavailable for the Badgers’ upcoming game with Illinois due to an injured left leg. But he’s not among the players out for the season.

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst declined to offer a timetable for when Cundiff possibly could return.

Cundiff injured his leg as he went down after making a catch in the final minute of the first half at Ohio State. As he was carted off the field, just about every Wisconsin player left the sideline to greet him and offer support.

It’s the second straight season in which Cundiff has been carted off the field with a major injury. He dislocated an ankle, broke his fibula and tore the deltoid ligament in his right leg last year in a 27-7 victory over Iowa, knocking him out for the rest of the season.

Cundiff came back from that injury and caught two touchdown passes in a 17-14 loss to Washington State earlier this season. He has nine catches for 142 yards to go along with those two scores.

Hayden Rucci and Jack Eschenbach figure to get most of the work at tight end while Cundiff’s out.
