Smoke But No Fire At The Ripon Historical Society
Ripon Area Fire District firefighters responded to the Ripon Historical Society headquarters in the 500 block of Watson Street late Monday morning for a report of smoke in the building. Fire Department officials say there were no injuries or damage to the building. Fire Chief Tim Saul says an electrical issue in the furnace caused the smoke. An HVAC service was called to take a look at the furnace last night. A Ripon Historical Society official working in the building at the time of the incident called the fire department after noticing smoke.
Standoff Incident In Oshkosh
Oshkosh Police arrested a 39-year-old Oshkosh man Monday afternoon in the 500 block of East County Road Y during a potentially dangerous situation. The man is a felon and was a passenger in a vehicle. Police stopped the vehicle because they believed he might be in possession of weapons. The driver exited the vehicle to talk with officers but the man refused to get out of the vehicle. The Oshkosh Police Department SWAT and Negotiations Teams responded to the scene. The man was taken into custody after several hours of negotiations. He is facing felon in possession of firearms, possession of methamphetamine, felony bail jumping, possession of drug paraphernalia, and obstructing or resisting arrest. Police were also granted a search warrant to search the man’s residence in the 900 block of East Sunnyview Road for weapons.
First Case Of West Nile Virus In Human In Sheboygan County
The state’s Department of Health Services is reminding people to protect themselves from mosquito bites following the first confirmed case this year of West Nile virus in a Sheboygan County resident. Despite cooler temperatures, mosquito activity and the risk of West Nile virus will continue until the first hard frost temperatures below 28 degrees for at least four consecutive hours. Cases of the virus have also been reported in three animals in Wisconsin, two horses and a bird. The animal cases were located in Trempealeau, Monroe, and Milwaukee counties.
Free Job Fair Coming Up In Ripon
The Ripon Chamber of Commerce will be holding a Job Fair on Friday, October 7th from 11 am to 1 pm at the Ripon College Great Hall. The Great Hall is located near the corner of Seward Street and Woodside Avenue by the college sign. Attendees are encouraged to bring their resume. Whether hoping to find a fresh start, a better job, or a new career direction, job seekers will find a wealth of exciting opportunities at the free job fair. There will be employers from a variety of industry sectors who will be eager to hire in a wide range of fields. The job fair is open to the entire community.

Opioid Settlement
State Senator Joan Ballweg says she and her Joint Finance Committee colleagues a couple of weeks ago approved a plan to allocate $31 million Wisconsin will get as part of the nationwide opioid settlements. She says the state will continue to get money as part of that settlement over the next 17 years. She says the state’s Department of Health Services came up with a plan for the moneys part of which was to give the Department of Public Instruction $2 million. She says the DPI already gets money for programs to address drug use so they allocated it for law enforcement officers and others so they can have more Narcan and training to address the opioid issues they see. She says they also wanted programs like the Boys & Girls Club of the Tri-County Area to have funding available to address the root causes of substance abuse and build on the work they do with youth.
National Night Out Celebration In Ripon Sunday
The Ripon Police Department will hold their National Night Out celebration this Sunday from 1 to 3 pm at the Village Green in Ripon. It is a different location than in the past. For years they held it at Barlow Park. Community Liaison Officer Lindsey Michels says the pandemic meant adapting to restrictions and they were also competing with other National Night Out celebrations in early August when it is usually scheduled. So they switched things up and have an Autumn theme. There will be apple cider and doughnuts, a bounce house obstacle course, police, fire and EMS vehicle tours, fall treats, a drone unit, and each kid will be able to take home their own pumpkin. She says National Night Out is about building strong relations ships with kids and the community.
RASD Distinguished Alumni Award
The Ripon Area School District will be awarding the 2022 Distinguished Alumni Award to Jill Geer. Jill Geer’s career has been focused on helping U.S. Olympic athletes share their stories with the American public. It has taken her to six Olympic games and 18 countries as the Team USA spokesperson in track & field and gymnastics. Jill grew up in Ripon with school, community, and sports the family focus. She attended every home high school and Ripon College basketball and football game. She graduated with honors from Ripon High School in 1988 as a state champion in cross country and holding several records in basketball and track & field. She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Arkansas, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history. She as an NCAA Championships participant in cross country, competed for the track team and was a writer and editor for the campus newspaper.
