Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers did just enough to beat Tom Brady and the short-handed Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The NFL MVP threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns, and the Packers withstood a late rally led by Brady to hold off the Bucs for a 14-12 victory in the first meeting between the teams since Tampa Bay won the NFC championship game two seasons ago. Rodgers tossed TD passes of 5 yards to Romeo Doubs and 6 yards to Allen Lazard on his team’s first two possessions, while the Bucs’ offense sputtered much of the day without star receivers Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Julio Jones.
For the second straight week, the Bucs (2-1) were held without a touchdown into the fourth quarter. Brady finally got them into the end zone on a 1-yard pass to Russell Gage, capping an 89-yard drive with 14 seconds remaining.
Tampa Bay’s bid to force overtime with a 2-point conversion was thwarted, first by a delay-of-game penalty and then an incomplete pass that was tipped by Packers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, who also had 14 tackles.
The Packers (2-1) forced two turnovers and held Tampa Bay to fewer than 200 net yards before the Bucs’ final drive.
Rodgers completed 27 of 35 passes and was intercepted once in the first matchup in NFL history in which each starting quarterback has won at least three regular-season league MVP awards. Rodgers has won four, including the past two, while Brady has three MVPs.
Ryan Succop kicked a pair of 45-yard field goals for the Bucs, the second trimming Green Bay’s lead to 14-6 midway through the third quarter.
Brady, who won three of four previous head-to-head matchups with Rodgers, finished 31 of 42 passing for 271 yards and one touchdown. He was sacked three times and got minimal help from a rushing attack that produced 34 yards on 14 attempts. After leading the NFL in completions, passing yards and touchdowns last season, Brady has has thrown for 673 yards, three TDs and one interception through three games.
With Evans serving a one-game suspension for his role in an on-field brawl the previous week at New Orleans and without Godwin and Jones — two of Brady’s other primary receivers — the Bucs were forced to rely on Gage, Breshad Perriman, Scotty Miller, Jaelon Darden and newly signed Cole Beasley against the Packers.
Rodgers led long scoring drives on Green Bay’s first two possessions, building a 14-3 halftime lead that could have been bigger.
Aaron Jones fumbled into the end zone after a 3-yard reception to the Bucs 2, costing the Packers a chance to add at least three points late in the second quarter. The Green Bay offense was never the same after that.
Safety Ryan Logan recovered the fumble that kept the Packers from building on their lead, and later had an interception that led to Succop’s second field goal.
Packers LT David Bakhtiari played for just the second time since tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Dec. 31, 2020. . Rookie WR Christian Watson (hamstring) was inactive and CB Jaire Alexander (groin) did not play in the second half.
The Packers host the New England Patriots next Sunday.
Elsewhere in the NFC North the Bears held on to win 23-20 at Soldier Field to improve to 2-1 and Minnesota also won at home coming back to beat Detroit 28-24.
In Sunday night Football quarterback Russell Wilson threw a touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter and the Seahawks defense held on for an 11-10 home victory over the 49ers. It was only the second time in league history that a game ended 11-10.
In Monday Night Football the Cowboys play on the road against the Giants.
Spencer Steer hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth and Nick Lodolo pitched six strong innings as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Sunday. It was the final road game for the Brewers, who dropped two games behind Philadelphia for the final NL wild card playoff spot, pending the Phillies rain-delayed game against Atlanta.
Milwaukee finishes with nine games at home against St. Louis, Miami and Arizona. The Brewers would lose any tiebreakers with the Phillies or San Diego because they lost the season series against both of them.
Hunter Renfroe homered for the Brewers, who were unable to complete their first four-game sweep of the Reds since 2003. Renfroe who tied a career high with four hits including two homers and a season-high five RBIs on Saturday, homered on the first pitch leading off the second for a 1-0 lead.
Freddy Peralta, who hadn’t pitched since Sept. 8 due to right shoulder inflammation, threw two innings before giving way to Aaron Ashby.
Cincinnati tied the score 1-1 in the fourth when Ashby hit Austin Romine with the bases loaded — one of two hit batters for Ashby.
Milwaukee’s lone run and all of its hits against Lodolo came in the second inning.
Steer’s solo home run leading off the eighth was his second homer, his first since his major league debut on Sept. 2nd.
Matt Bush (2-3) took the loss. Buck Farmer (2-1) got the win and Alexis Diaz earned his ninth save.
The Brewers are off Monday. Then RHP Adrian Houser (6-9, 4.62) starts Tuesday in the opener of a two-game series against the Cardinals.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Dodgers beat the Cardinals 4-1 and the Cubs over the Pirates 8-3. Milwaukee trails Philadelphia by 1 ½ games in the NL Central in the race for the final Wild Card spot.
In golf, the U.S. Team has won the 14th Presidents Cup, defeating the International Team by a 17.5-12.5 margin at Quail Hollow Club. The U.S. improves to 12-1-1 all-time in the biennial competition, remaining undefeated on American soil at 8-0-0.
The U.S. Team entered Sunday Singles with an 11-7 advantage over the International Team, and the United States weathered an early opposing surge with consistent play across the lineup. Xander Schauffele won his match to clinch the Presidents Cup for U.S. Team
Cade Stover and Emeka Egbuka each caught two of C.J. Stroud’s five touchdown passes, Miyan Williams rushed for two more scores and No. 3 Ohio State blew by Wisconsin early and cruised to a 52-21 win on Saturday night.
The Buckeyes (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) scored touchdowns on their first four drives and led 31-7 at the half. Wisconsin could only slow them down after that but didn’t get closer than 21 points.
Running backs TreVeyon Henderson and Williams both had 100-yard games; Henderson had 121 yards, and Williams averaged more than 9 yards per carry in rumbling for 101.
Stroud completed 17 of 27 attempts for 281 yards and also threw an interception for the first time this season. He has 16 touchdown passes in four games.
The TD catches were the first for Stover, a tight end in his fourth year who has also played defensive end and linebacker for the Buckeyes. His first was on a 13-yard toss, two plays after after Ohio State safety Tanner McCalister picked off Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz.
Later the 6-foot-4, 255-pound tight end caught a 2-yard scoring pass to put the Buckeyes up 21-0 before the end of the first quarter.
Egbuka caught scoring passes of 32 and 8 yards. Julian Fleming also caught a touchdown pass for the Buckeyes.
Mertz was 11 for 20 for 94 yards, rushed for a touchdown and threw for another. Braelon Allen rushed for 165 yards, including a 75-yard TD romp in the fourth quarter.
Wisconsin hosts Illinois next Saturday. The Illini (3-1) beat Chattanooga 31-0 on Thursday.
