Lily Peters Murder Suspect Seeking To Move Case To Juvenile Court

The lawyer for the teen accused of killing 10-year-old Lily Peters of Chippewa Falls last April is looking to move the case from adult to juvenile court. Attorney Michael Cohen is representing the 14-year-old suspected of luring Peters into the woods on April 24th when she was riding her bicycle home from her aunt’s home. Cohen appeared in Chippewa County Circuit Court Thursday via Zoom. He said he planned to file the request in the coming weeks. Judge Benjamin Lane found probable cause during the hearing to proceed to trial. The teenage suspect waived his right to a preliminary hearing. He is charged with first degree intentional homicide and two counts of sexual assault. The teen is being held in a juvenile detention facility on a $1 million cash bond.

Fire Damages Home In Beaver Dam

Firefighters in Beaver Dam last night were dispatched to the 500 block of Mackie Street for a fire at a two-story home. Police say it was initially reported as a fire in a smoker in the backyard, but when firefighters arrived flames were coming from the residence. As a safety precaution two adjacent buildings were evacuated. Fire departments from Juneau, Horicon, Waupun, and Watertown provided mutual aid in fighting the blaze. The time of the fire call was 6:45 pm.

Discussion Over Abandoned Utility Poles

Ripon’s Public Works Committee this week discussed whether to tweak a city ordinance to do something about abandoned utility poles in the city. The committee looked at a draft of an ordinance that would require utility companies to get permission from the Common Council or an easement to put in a pole and require removal once the pole is no longer safe or needed. Many utility poles are put in without the city’s knowledge or permission. City Administrator Adam Sonntag says the city should have more say when a utility pole becomes a nuisance, adds to blight, or is no longer safe. The problem for the city is the legality of such an ordinance. A couple of city officials including Public Works Director Mike Ehrenberg will reach out to Alliant Energy to see what they say and how they work with other cities’ officials. Committee members will continue discussions about the issue in an upcoming meeting.

Illegal Drug Trade Shift

The Sheriff of Fond du Lac County says the southern border crisis and influx of illegal immigrants and drugs has changed the drug trade in the area. Ryan Waldschmit says 5 years ago it wasn’t unusual to see methamphetamine labs in places like Fond du Lac and Ripon. But now drug runners can make more money picking up meth at the southern borders and bringing it back up to Wisconsin. He says it is cheaper around the southern borders and is more potent. Waldschmidt points out they’ve had some significant drug busts along the I-41 corridor and they are learning from those drug dealers that the source of meth and oxycodone pills laced with fentanyl is the southern border. He says Chicago and Milwaukee aren’t the drug source cities they used to be.

Licensure Backlog

State Representative Alex Dallman says the Republican-controlled legislature provided additional funding and staffing for the Department of Safety and Professional Services to tackle a backlog in licensure for a variety of jobs. In the past two budgets, over 10 new positions have been added for Professional Trade and Regulation and over $10 million was designated for IT upgrades and online licensing. The state lawmaker from Green Lake blames the Governor for the delay on the backlog. He says some people in the 41st State Assembly District have waited months and others across the state more than a year to get the licenses they need for their professions.  He says people are doing their bit sending in checks when they apply for renewal of a license or a new license. He points out when there was a backlog for unemployment at the Department of Workforce Development in 2020 the Governor moved people over from other jobs and nothing is preventing him from doing it in this instance.
