Sports for Friday

From Wayne Mausser

The Packers host the Bears Sunday night in their home opener at Lambeau Field.  Green Bay opened the season with a 23-7 loss at Minnesota against the Vikings while the Bears won at home on a soggy field, 19-10 over the 49ers, as quarterback Justin Fields led them to a second-half comeback.

The Packers defense will have to contend Fields and his ability to scramble and make plays on the run.

“He’s elusive, Justin Fields is elusive,” defensive lineman Kenny Clark said. “He’s fast but he’s also strong. He can break a lot of arm tackles so when you do tackle him make sure we wrap him up and get him on the ground.”

After a sluggish start Fields  threw two touchdowns and posted a 145.8 passer rating in the second half.

The Packers also have to get their offense jump-started after managing a lone touchdown against the Vikings.  This week coach Mattt LaFleur and quarterback Aaron Rodgers talked about getting running backs Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillion more involved in the offense.  Green Bay will also have the services of wide receiver Allen Lazard, who sat out last week’s opener because of an ankle injury.  The Packers are also hoping to have starting left tackle David Bakhtiari (knee) and left guard Eltgon Jenkins (knee), back on the offensive line. Bakhtiari did not practice on Thursday while Jenkins saw limited participation. Guard Jon Runyan (concussion) also did not participate

Sunday marks the 205th meeting between the Packers and the Bears covering the regular season and post season.  The Pregame starts at 5:00 with the kickoff at 7:20 and can be heard on FM 1023, The Bug.

In Thursday Night Football the Kansas City Chiefs hung on at home for a 27-24 win over the San Diego Chargers.  The Chiefs improved to 2-0 while the Chargers slipped to 1-1. Kansas City overcame a 10-point second half comeback sparked by a 99 interception return for a touchdown by Jaylen Watson in the fourth quarter.  Watson stepped in front of tight end Gerald Evertt to pick off a pass from Justin Herbert and brought it all the way back for the go-ahead score.  It was the longest go-ahead four-quarter touchdown by a rookie in NFL history.

The Brewers are back in action tonight hosting the Yankees and Aaron Judge in a weekend series at American Family Field. Judge has hit 57 home runs on the season.  New York sends right-hander Frankie Montas (5-12, 3.89 ERA) against righty Arian Houser (6-9, 4.61 ERA). First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

In the NL Central Thursday the Mets beat the Pirates 7-1 and the Reds nipped the Cardinals 3-2. The Brewers trail the Cardinals by 7 ½ games in the division and 1 ½ games behind San Diego in the race for the final Wild Card spot.

The Badgers will try and bounce back from last Saturday’s loss at home to Washington State as they host New Mexico State.  Wisconsin is 1-1 while New Mexico State is 0-3.  Kickoff is at 2:30 and the game can be heard on AM 1600/93.1 FM, WRPN.

Ripon College (2-0) at Cornell College (1-1)

UW-Oshkosh (1-1) at Millsaps College (Mississippi) (1-1)
