Two Charged For Dodge County Traffic Chases

Two men are facing felony eluding and operating while intoxicated charges for separate traffic chases in Dodge County over the weekend. Thirty-two-year-old Richard Hron (pictured) of Horicon is also being charged with possession of drug paraphernalia following a chase early Saturday morning on State Highway 33 that ended on Highway 151 south of Highway 33. He was booked into the County Jail on a probation violation. Meanwhile 42-year-old Brian Hellenbrand will also be charged with felony bail jumping and a misdemeanor charge of operating after revocation for a chase on Highway 151 Friday afternoon. Speeds in that pursuit exceeded 90 miles an hour.

Ripon Common Council Considering ATV/UTV Ordinance

The Ripon Common Council tonight will consider a proposed ordinance regulating ATV and UTV routes in the city. Two members of the Council asked for the ordinance to be placed on this evening’s agenda for consideration. Four members of the public spoke at the Council’s last meeting asking them to reconsider an ordinance allowing ATV and UTV use in the city. The issue was last taken up by the Council on June 28th of last year but failed to be taken off of the table. The motion to table occurred at a Council meeting on September 28th of 2020. The meeting is this evening at 7 pm in the Council Chamber of the Ripon City Hall.

FDL County Emergency Management Director

The Fond du Lac County Board is expected to approve the appointment of B.J. DeMaa as the county’s next Communications and Emergency Management Director. He is currently the Waupun Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director. County Executive Sam Kaufman is recommending his appointment, which would take effect October 2nd.  DeMaa has been with the Waupun Fire Department for 20 years the last 8 years as fire chief and emergency management director. He feels he’s ready for the emergency management director position at the county level. The County Board tonight is also expected to appoint Sheriff’s Lieutenant Eric Halbach to serve as Interim Communications Center Director. He will serve in that role and Kaufman as Interim Emergency Management Director until DeMaa takes over on October 2nd.

Rolling Meadows Golf Course Ad Hoc Committee

The Fond du Lac County Board tonight will consider a resolution that would create a Rolling Meadows Golf Course Ad Hoc Committee. The Resolution comes at the request of County Board Chairperson Steve Abel, but County Executive Sam Kaufman had asked for a committee to look into the operations of the golf course which over the years has accrued nearly $2.6 million in debt. The Committee will consist of 7 county board supervisors. The new committee will meet right after the County Board at 7:30 pm to select a chair and vice-chair and set their next meeting date. Kaufman says he’s hoping the committee will be able to come up with some recommendations by the end of the year or very early next year. The Fond du Lac County Board meets at 6 pm this evening in the legislative chambers of the City-County Government Center in Fond du Lac.

Recovery Month

Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says there is help available within the county if someone is trying to recover from substance abuse. She says the county has unfortunately seen a number of overdoses due to opioid abuse. She urges individuals and groups to take advantage of the Narcan training the county health department can offer. Mueller says they also work with inmates at the county jail to address drug abuse issues so they can continue treatment once they are out of jail. She says the county is fortunate to have a number of places that can help. That includes the county’s own Department of Community Programs and there is also Community Medical Services located in Fond du Lac.

New Winnebago County Court Commissioners

Winnebago County recently added two new court commissioners. Court Commissioner Eric Heywood started June 13th. He has worked in Winnebago County in various roles since 2010, including Public Defender and Prosecutor offices. In 2019, he was presented with the Up and Coming Lawyer Award by the Wisconsin Law Journal. Court Commissioner Michael Rust started on July 5th. He has worked in the Winnebago County Courthouse for the past 9 ½ years as the CEO of the Winnebago Conflict Resolution Center. Prior to his work in mediation, he practiced litigation for a private firm in Brown County. He serves on the Board of Administrative Oversight for the Office of Lawyer Regulation and in 2019 he was recognized with the Beacon Award, a Distinguished Alumni Award, by Carthage College.

Beaver Dam Area Community Foundation Accepting Grant Applications

The Beaver Dam Area Community Foundation has started its fall grant cycle and is accepting applications. Grants support programs and projects that make Dodge County a great place to live, work, and play. Grants disbursed in the second and final grant cycle of the year have the potential to fund a wide range of projects. Eligible nonprofit organizations located in Dodge County are invited to submit grant applications for up to $2,500. Projects should be practical, set into action within a near timeframe, and have prospects for long-term sustainability, if applicable. A full list of grant criteria and the application are available at the foundation’s website. The deadline for submitting an application is Friday, October 21st. Grant award decisions will be communicated in early December.
