Sports for August 9th

Jordan Love will start at quarterback for the Packers in their preseason opener Friday at San Francisco.  As for Aaron Rodgers?

Matt LaFleur will make a determination about the 4-time MVP playing in any exhibition action after the Saints game at the end of next week. Safety Darnell Savage will be held out of practice all week after a hamstring injury knocked him out of Family Night last Friday. In practice 11 Monday, the defense won out again in what may have been the units best practice.  And most noteworthy, the one-on-one drills between the wide receivers and defensive backs, were definitely slanted towards those DBs.  Sammy Watkins went against Eric Stokes time and time again. Watkins has been through a lot of training camps in a lot of different NFL cities. How does this competition stack up?

“It is real,” Watkins said. “Because we have a heck of a defense. We have a lot of dogs. They are going to compete. They are going to talk trash. I think that is going to make both of us better on both sides of the ball. The receivers, we have to step up and make those plays. It feels great going out there each day knowing I have no choice but to get better.”

Me and Sammy are always going at it,” Stokes said. “There is just something about his game that is very unique and I love going against him. He has a veteran side to him. He can pull a lot of savvy moves and little things. I love going against Sammy. And Sammy loves going against me.” As for the players trying to work back from injuries, rookie receiver Christian Watson was doing a lot more rehab today as he is looking to get back from his offseason knee procedure that has kept him out for all of training camp so far.

The Packers practiced in light rain at times Monday and will be back on the practice field this morning at 10:30.

After an off-day Monday the Brewers continue their short home-stand with the first of two interleague games against the Tampa Bay Rays.  Brandon Woodruff (3-2, 4.46 ERA) will start for Milwaukee.  Tampa Bay has not yet named a starter. First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

In the NL Central Monday the Mets beat the Reds 5-1, the Cubs downed the Nationals 6-3 and Arizona shutout Pittsburgh 3-0.  St. Louis had the day off.  The Cardinals lead the Brewers by two games in the division.

The Midwest League is back in action today.  South Bend (57-45) plays the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (54-47) at Fox Cities Stadium.  First pitch is at 6:40.

In the Northwoods League Andrew Semo (San Diego) drove in the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly in the tenth inning to give the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters a series-opening, 7-6, win over the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders on Monday night at Witter Field.  The loss was the third in a row for the Dock Spiders, who fell into third place overall in the Great Lakes West Division at 34-32, a game back of the Wausau Woodchucks for the final playoff spot in the division. The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters won their Northwoods League record 53rd game of the year and broke the previous record of 52, set by the Rafters in 2017.

The two teams are set to meet for the series finale tonight in Wisconsin Rapids. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has chosen former New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey to hear the appeal of the six-game suspension for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson.

The NFL is seeking a tougher penalty under the league’s personal conduct policy in the wake of disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson’s ruling Monday. Under the collective bargaining agreement, Goodell had the option to consider the appeal himself or to appoint a designee.

The league is appealing for an indefinite suspension that would be a minimum of one year (as it had previously sought), a source told ESPN, as well as a monetary fine (which Watson was not levied by Robinson) and treatment that the star quarterback must undergo.
