Sports for August 5th
From Wayne Mausser
The Milwaukee Brewers insist they’re not suffering from sort of a Josh Hader hangover. Sure looks like it though.
Bryan Reynolds raced home on a wild pitch with one out in the 10th inning, lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-4 victory on Thursday to complete a three-game sweep of Milwaukee. Reynolds led off the bottom of the 10th by tying the game with a ground-rule double to right field that scored rookie Tucupita Maracano. Reynolds advanced to third on a fly ball to right by Ke’Bryan Hayes and scored when a 0-2 curveball by Milwaukee reliever Matt Bush (2-2) skipped by catcher Victor Caratini.
The Brewers fell to 0-3 since trading Hader, their four-time All-Star closer, to San Diego on Monday. Milwaukee failed to hold on to multiple-run leads in all three games at PNC Park, though starter Brandon Woodruff downplayed the idea that Hader’s departure played a role in getting swept at PNC Park for the first time in two years.
Milwaukee took the lead in the top of the 10th when Duane Underwood Jr. (1-3) hit Kolten Wong with the bases loaded and two outs. Leftfielder Ben Gamel then made a diving grab on a sinking liner by Hunter Renfroe to escape further damage, and the Pirates responded in the bottom of the inning behind Reynolds, who hit a walk-off home run leading off the bottom of the ninth in an 8-7 win on Wednesday.
Reynolds, Gamel, Maracano and catcher Jason Delay had two hits each for Pittsburgh. The victory snapped a six-game losing streak in extra-inning contests by the Pirates. Pittsburgh has won three straight following a seven-game slide that briefly dropped the club into last in the NL Central.
Pittsburgh trailed 3-1 in the seventh but pulled even behind RBI singles by Maracano and Gamel, the last coming against reliever Brad Boxberger that allowed Delay to score after Boxberger came on with two on and one out in the seventh. While the run wasn’t charged to Boxberger, it symbolized how Milwaukee’s bullpen struggled during the series. Brewers relievers were charged with nine runs over the course of three games.
Mike Brousseau hit a two-run home run for Milwaukee and Victor Caratini added his seventh, but the Pirates also scored a pair of runs on wild pitches, including the winner.
The Brewers played the final 3 1/2 innings without star Christian Yelich and manager Craig Counsell. Both were ejected in the bottom of the seventh for arguing balls and strikes with home-plate umpire Jerry Meals after Yelich struck out looking to end the top of the inning.
The Brewers made some roster moves Thursday, placing, catcher Omar Narváez on the 10-day injured list with a left quad strain. Narváez tweaked the muscle while rounding third base on a hit by Willy Adames on Wednesday. Recalled C Mario Feliciano from Triple-A Nashville to fill in during Narváez’s absence.
The Brewers begin a five-game homestand on Friday night when they open a three-game set against Cincinnati. Eric Lauer (7-3, 3.75 ERA) will face Robert Dugger (0-0, 4.50) in the opener. First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central on Thursday the Cardinals swept a doubleheader from the Cubs 4-3 and 7-2 while the Reds had the day off. Milwaukee and Saint Louis are tied for first in the division.
In the Midwest League Thursday Quad Cities beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 9-6 after dropping the first two games of their series at home. They meet again tonight with the first pitch at 6:30.
In the Northwoods League Thursday, the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders fell to the Green Bay Rockers, 7-3, at Capital Credit Union Park on Thursday night in Green Bay. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Rockers and saw them improve to 24-38 on the year, and 14-12 in the second half. The Dock Spiders fell to 33-29 on the year and 14-14 in the second half.
The Dock Spiders are back at home tonight against the Rockers at Herr-Baker Field, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Tomorrow night is Heart Health Night with a Heart Healthy Weaver Bobblehead giveaway and post-game fireworks. The first 500 fans through the gates will receive a Heart Healthy Weaver bobblehead courtesy of SSM Health. Plus, all fans can enjoy post-game fireworks presented by the Fond du Lac Area Women’s Fund. The Dock Spiders will also wear special Heart Health jerseys that are available for auction online until Monday, August 8 at 10:00 a.m.
The Packers completed day eight of training camp Thursday and tonight will feature Family Night at Lambeau Field. The Packers defense continues to show improvement under Jim Berry, now in his second year as defensive coordinator. Adrian Amos ended the first-team two-minute drill Thursday with an interception from Aaron Rodgers. Amos had 93 tackles, two interceptions and eight pass break-ups in 2021. He was also a captain. The Packers are coming off back-to-back seasons finishing ninth in total defense in the NFL, with two difference defensive coordinators.
Meanwhile, gates for Family Night open at 5:30 and the team will take the field at 7pm to begin warmups and will start practice at 7:30. Festivities begin before then though. Family activities will begin at 1:30 in the Lambeau Field Atrium and parking lot. Parking is available in the Lambeau lot for five dollars. Net proceeds support hunger efforts.
In the Hall of Fame game last night the Las Vegas Raiders beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-11.
The Badgers conducted day-two of their training camp yesterday. Last year Fond du Lac’s Braelon Allen had a huge freshman season and became one of the Big Ten’s if not the country’s leading running backs. He said last season he was just hoping to learn the offense, but now he’s hoping to take the next step this year.
A Russian court sentenced WNBA star Brittney Griner to nine years in prison Thursday, an expected conclusion to her trial that should allow negotiations for a prisoner swap to accelerate
.
Griner, who was arrested Feb. 17 for bringing cannabis into the country, had been prepared for a harsh sentence, sources close to the player said. But she and her supporters have also been aware that Russia was not going to move forward with a trade that could bring her home until her trial was completed. A guilty verdict was considered a foregone conclusion, and Griner pleaded guilty July 7, though the case continued under Russian law.
During sentencing, Judge Anna Sotnikova said she had found that Griner intentionally broke the law and also fined her 1 million rubles (about $16,700). Sotnikova said the time Griner has served in custody since her arrest in February would count toward the sentence.
Griner reacted to the sentence with little emotion, listening to the verdict with a blank stare on her face.
