Bryan Reynolds hit a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning, powering the Pittsburgh Pirates to an 8-7 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night.
Facing a 2-0 count, Reynolds sent a fastball from Devin Williams (2-1) 425 feet to right-center field for a lead-off blast. Reynolds’ 16th homer of the season and first walk-off in the majors ended a drought of 15 games since he hit three against the Washington Nationals on June 26.
Wil Crowe (4-6) struck out one without allowing a hit in the final 1 1/3 innings for Pittsburgh.
Willy Adames had four RBIs for the Brewers, the final two coming on a two-out single in the eighth that cut into a three-run deficit. Rowdy Tellez then sent an RBI single down the line in right, tying it at 7.
Taylor Rogers, acquired as part of a trade that sent closer Josh Hader to the San Diego Padres on Monday, struck out one and walked one in the eighth for the Brewers.
After Ke’Bryan Hayes gave the Pirates a 5-4 lead with an RBI single in the seventh, Oneil Cruz followed by driving a sinker from Brent Suter 434 feet to right-center. The two-run homer, the eighth in 36 games for the 23-year-old, came after he had a three-run shot in the sixth inning Tuesday.
The Pirates fell behind 4-0 in the second when starter Tyler Beede gave up a two-run double to Adames. Beede was replaced after 1 1/3 innings by Dillon Peters, who allowed an RBI single by Tellez.
Brewers starter Freddy Peralta surrendered a two-run double to Hayes, cutting the lead in half in the third of the right-hander’s return from a lat strain. Pitching for the first time since May 22, Peralta gave up two runs on four hits and 67 pitches (41 strikes) in 3 2/3 innings.
Michael Chavis hit a double down the right-field line, scoring Cruz from first to cut Milwaukee’s lead to 4-3 in the sixth. Tucupita Marcano tied it with a single, his third hit after being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis earlier in the day.
The Brewers made several roster moves Wednesday as RHP Dinelson Lamet and catcher Pedro Severino were designated for assignment. Lamet was acquired from the San Diego Padres as part of a package for closer Josh Hader on Monday. RHP Peter Strzelecki was optioned to Triple-A Nashville.
RHP Brandon Woodruff (9-3, 3.55 ERA) will take the mound for the Brewers against Pirates RHP Zach Thompson (3-8, 5.09) in the finale of the three-game series on Thursday afternoon. Woodruff has allowed more than two earned runs once in his past nine starts. Thompson has given up seven runs in each of his past two starts. First pitch is at 11:35 CDT and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday Miami shutout Cincinnati 3-0 and Chicago at St. Louis was postponed. They’ll play a day-night doubleheader today. Milwaukee now leads St. Louis by 1 ½ games in the division.
In the Midwest League Wednesday night the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won at Quad Cities for the second straight night, 8-6. The teams meet again tonight with the first pitch set for 6:30.
In the Northwoods League Wednesday night the Battle Creek Battle Jacks routed the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders 17-7 at Herr-Baker Field. The Dock Spiders hit the road tonight against the Green Bay Rockers with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35.
The Packers hope to boost their defense this season and so far have the edge over the offense in training camp. As for the offense, quarterback Aaron Rodgers said there’s been days in camp where they’ve run the ball well. He said the offense not been as good in protection in red zone drills, but said there’s still a lot of time to look at film and make corrections.
Meanwhile, the Packers continue gearing up for Friday’s Family Night. Family night is a full practice with a game-like atmosphere. Tickets are available online and cost $10. Everyone, regardless of age, needs a ticket to attend.
Gates for Family Night open at 5:30 p.m. The team will take the field at 7 p.m. to begin warmups and will start the practice at 7:30 p.m. Festivities begin before then, though. Family activities will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Lambeau Field atrium and parking lot.
Parking is available in the Lambeau lot for five dollars. Net proceeds support hunger relief efforts.
The Wisconsin Badgers opened training camp Wednesday. The Badgers finished behind Iowa and Minnesota in the Big 10 West last season, closing at 6-3 in the conference and 9-4 overall. The Badgers finished the season with a 20-13 win over Arizona State in the Las Vegas Bowl.
Coach Paul Chryst said he wants quarterback Graham Mertz this season to play with more confidence and consistency and if he can do those things, he can make his teammates better.
The NFL on Wednesday appealed the six-game suspension for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, seeking a tougher penalty under the league’s personal conduct policy in the wake of disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson’s ruling Monday.
In a statement, the league said it notified the NFL Players Association that it would appeal and then filed its brief Wednesday afternoon.
The league said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will determine who will hear the appeal. Under the collective bargaining agreement, Goodell has the option to consider the appeal himself or can appoint a designee to do so.
A source told ESPN that the NFL is appealing for an indefinite suspension that would be a minimum of one year (as it had previously sought), a monetary fine (which Watson was not levied by Robinson) and treatment that the star quarterback must undergo.
The union also had the right to appeal Robinson’s ruling, although it issued a statement Sunday night saying it would “stand by her decision” and not appeal, regardless of the result, and called on the league to agree to the same.
The NFLPA has until Friday to file a written response to the NFL’s appeal.
