Chad Maertz Being Released From Prison
The Fond du Lac Police Department will be holding a public community notification meeting tomorrow night at 6 pm about a sex offender who is being released into the community. The meeting will be at the Police Department in conference room A. Fifty-three-year-old Chad Maertz will be living at 457 Thomas Street in Fond du Lac beginning next Tuesday. Maertz was convicted of attempted forceful abduction of a child in Fond du Lac County court in 2002 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison and 10 years of extended supervision. Maertz tried to abduct a 16-year-old girl who was riding her bike in a secluded area near Campbellsport. He chased her and grabbed her bike and attempted to lure her into his vehicle. He was also convicted in Washington County in 1987 of 2 counts of first degree sexual assault and 2 counts of child enticement. His victims were 6 and 11 year old girls. Maertz will be on GPS monitoring. He is currently incarcerated at Racine Correctional Institution. (Maertz pictured above)
Oshkosh Man Charged For Chase In Ripon
A felony charge of attempting to flee or elude an officer has been filed against a 30-year-old Oshkosh man who led a Ripon police officer on a high speed chase on April 28th. According to the criminal complaint the officer tried to pull Thomas Zimdars over because he had no front license plate but Zimdars fled from the city and out into the county. The officer’s supervisor had him terminate the pursuit at the intersection of Oak Grove Road and Oak Mound Road in the Town of Alto. During the 9.3 mile pursuit Zimdars allegedly reached a top speed of 114 miles an hour. When the officer talked with Zimdars at the Fond du Lac County jail in June Zimdars said he couldn’t recall much from that timeframe because he was on a lot of drugs. Zimdars will make his initial court appearance on the charge on August 16th.
Gas Leak Reported In Wautoma
A gas leak in Wautoma Tuesday afternoon resulted in the evacuation of some homes. Wautoma Police says it happened at the old BP gas station at 613 West Main Street. The leak was caused by a private contractor digging in the area. WE Energy crews were able to get the leak stopped in 24 minutes and all areas were quickly reopened. WE Energy determined based on wind speed, wind direction, the leak size, and leak location, that only a couple of residences and roadway north of the leak needed evacuation. No one was harmed during the gas leak.
Tom Poberezny Funeral Services Tomorrow
Funeral arrangements are set for former EAA president and chairman Tom Poberezny who passed away at the age of 75 on July 25th. Poberezny’s death was announced during the first day of AirVenture last week in Oshkosh. The Krause Funeral Home in Brookfield is handling the funeral and visitation. Visitation is from 12 to 1:45 pm tomorrow afternoon at the funeral home with the funeral service following at 2 pm. Memorials may be directed to EAA-The Tom Poberezny Young Eagles Scholarship. Green Lake County Fair Security
The Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office will be providing security for this week’s County Fair in Green Lake. Chief Deputy Matt Vande Kolk says given what has happened around the nation since last year’s fair people will see a few changes, but it is all part of an effort to make sure those attending can safely enjoy the fair and what it has to offer. Vande Kolk says they will have their command unit on scene during the fair something that they use at events throughout the year. The Fair kicks off on Thursday and runs through Sunday at the Fairgrounds in Green Lake. Among the highlights on Thursday are the Farm Bureau Pork Dinner, wristband night on the Midway, and a Truck and Tractor Pull.
Alzeheimer’s Education Virtual Conference
The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America brings its Educating America Tour to Wisconsin on August 24th. Chris Schneider is with the Foundation. He says 120,000 Wisconsin residents currently live with Alzheimer’s and that number will increase by 20 percent over the next 2 ½ years. He says one of three featured speakers for the virtual conference Dr. Lindsay Clark of the UW-Madison will talk about Early Detection and Reducing the Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease. Former Wisconsin Governor Martin Schreiber will talk about his experiences in caring for his wife Elaine who had Alzheimer’s, something she lived with for 18 years. The final speaker is a Dementia Outreach Specialist who will be talking about making your home safe for someone living with Alzheimer’s. Breastfeeding Celebration
In honor of World Breastfeeding Week the Fond du Lac County Health Department and the County’s WIC program will be holding a breastfeeding celebration tomorrow. It is from 3 to 5 pm at the Frasier Shelter in Fond du Lac’s Lakeside Park. County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says it is a way to recognize the mothers who are working hard to supply their infants with breastmilk. Mueller says there are some benefits breastmilk has over formula. It is easier for infants to digest; it provides a stronger immune system, better brain development, and protein. All family members and friends are welcome to attend. There will be light refreshments, a face painter, and other children’s activities.
Sadoff Starting Sooner With FDL Area Foundation
The Fond du Lac Area Foundation’s next Executive Director Aaron Sadoff will be starting in his new role sooner than first anticipated. Sadoff will begin with the Foundation on August 15th. The North Fond du Lac School District was able to expedite the process for filling Sadoff’s vacant superintendent position. Sadoff’s prior start date with the Foundation was January 1st of next year. Dave Hornung, chairman of the Fond du Lac Area Foundation board of directors, will continue to provide interim leadership until Sadoff’s start date. The Fond du Lac Area Foundation currently has a staff of six employees, more than $70 million in assets, and over 475 funds. The Foundation has two regional affiliates, the Beaver Dam Area Community Foundation and Horicon Funds.
Scooping The Loop Saturday In Ripon
“Scooping the Loop” returns to Ripon this weekend, the time honored tradition of driving through historic downtown Ripon to meet up with friends. For many residents it brings up great memories and created lifelong friendships. The city banned the activity from the community in 1992, but thanks to efforts of downtown business owners, the activity returned in 2019. One night each summer the nostalgic pastime returns to the downtown district. The 4th Annual Scooping the Loop event will take place this Saturday from 5 to 8 pm. Numerous stores will be open throughout the day to provide an adequate dose of retail therapy.
