Jury Tried For Horicon Man Charged With Vehicular Homicide

A jury trial has been scheduled next April for a 48-year-old Horicon man on vehicular homicide charges in Dodge County. The five-day trial for Daniel Bryfczynski begins next April 10th. He’s facing four felony and two misdemeanor charges.  Prosecutors say he had multiple drugs in his system when he fell asleep at the wheel of his pickup truck and crossed over the centerline on State Highway 33 and hit another car. The accident on June 16th of 2021 in the town of Oak Grove killed a 50-year-old Lake Mills woman, injured a 12-year-old passenger in her car, and hurt a passenger in Bryfczynski’s truck. He allegedly admitted to investigators he had smoked marijuana while he was out fishing that day. But a blood test revealed he also had cocaine, ketamine, and opiates in his system.

Green Lake County Crime Stoppers

The Green Lake County Crime Stoppers are looking for tips on a pair of recent vehicle thefts. Chief Deputy Matt Vande Kolk says a medical transport van was stolen from Badger Tire. It was recovered but it had been involved in a collision and was disabled. He says about the same time they recovered a vehicle that was stolen from the Waupaca area. It was found on South Road in the Whiteriver Marsh area. He says while the vehicles were recovered they are hoping for tips that will lead them to a suspect they can hold accountable for the thefts.  To call the Crime Stoppers the number is 1-800-438-8436 or text GETTHEM at 847411. School Bus Safety

With kids returning to school law enforcement and fire department officials are urging drivers to be on the lookout for children coming to and going to school. Green Lake County Chief Deputy Matt Vande Kolk reminds motorists they have to stop 20 feet behind or in front of a bus when it stops to pick up or disembark kids. He also urges people to reduce their speeds to 15 miles an hour when children are present in school zones. He says drivers should never pass on the right side of a bus that is stopped. Vande Kolk says they had a near miss situation on State Highway 23 a few years ago which could have been tragic if not for the fast action of the bus driver. The harvesting season for farms will begin in a few weeks adding more traffic to our roads.

COVID 19 Transmission Rates Still High

The president of SSM Health’s Ripon Community Hospital and Waupun Memorial Hospital says the CDC’s COVID-19 community levels for counties use different standards than what health care providers do to gauge the virus. DeAnn Thurmer says currently Dodge, Green Lake, and Fond du Lac County all have low community levels, but transmission rates for the coronavirus in those three counties are still high. She says the community levels are based more on the overall health risk to a person. Thurmer says they aren’t seeing as many hospitalizations or need for treatment in intensive care units. According to the CDC Winnebago, Waupaca, and Waushara counties also have low community levels of COVID-19.

Berlin ATV Use

The City of Berlin is once again considering an ordinance that would allow the use of ATV and UTVs in the city. The Common Council recently directed the city attorney to draft an ordinance that would permit their use in the city. Alderperson Luke Dretske says he’s keeping an open mind on the issue and would like to hear from people living in his district, Wards 1 and 7. He says there is some support for their use in the city and from ATV groups both inside and outside of Berlin that would like to see it happen. But he says the city held a referendum on the issue three years ago in which voters voted down their proposed use. He says some of those who voted in the referendum want to know if anything has really changed and whether or not there should be another referendum. Dretske notes the key issues related to ATV and UTV use are economic development and more importantly safety.
