The Chiefs and Packers rested most of their starters in their preseason finale Thursday night, which Kansas City won 17-10 behind two touchdown passes from Shane Buechele.
The third-stringer outplayed longtime Chiefs backup Chad Henne, throwing for 166 yards with both of his scoring strikes to journeyman tight end Matt Bushman, who later left with a shoulder injury and did not return.
The Packers’ Jordan Love completed 16 of 26 passes for 148 yards with an interception in his final work before Aaron Rodgers takes over for the regular season. Third string quarterback Danny Etling completed 10 of 13 passes for 97 yards
The lasting memory Thursday night wasn’t the score or a play, though, but Patrick Mahomes’ penalty. It came after the first-team Chiefs defense forced the Packers, playing their starting offensive line with Love and a host of backups, to a 3-and-out to start the game. Mahomes headed onto the field with most of Kansas City’s starting offense and lined them up in a choir huddle – the old-fashioned style favored by Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson.
Mahomes allowed the clock to run out but the delay-of-game penalty was announced not on his No. 15 but on No. 16, the number that Dawson wore during his playing days. It was among the many tributes to the Chiefs icon and longtime NFL broadcaster, who died this week at the age of 87. Mahomes, who had an excellent first two preseason games, never took a snap before joining Travis Kelce and other Chiefs stars on the sideline. Other starters, such as running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, were done after a couple of snaps.
Tyler Goodson, who’s trying to make the team as the third running back behind Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon, got the bulk of the work as he tries to beat out Patrick Taylor and Dexter Williams for the job. Goodson gained 28 yards on seven carries and also caught five passes for 26 yards. Rookie wide receiver Samori Touri led Green Bay’s receivers with six catches for 83 yares.
Packers wide receiver Christian Watson (knee surgery) did not play, which means the 34th overall pick in the draft will go into the season without any NFL game action. Safety Innis Gaines and TE Alize Mack left with hamstring injuries.
The Packers visit NFC North-rival Minnesota to open their season Sept. 11.
In other Thursday night game the Houston Texans shutout the visiting San Francisco 49ers 17-0. The rest of the league finishes up the preseason Friday and Saturday.
The Brewers return to action tonight hosting the Cubs in a three-game series at American Family Field. The Cubs send left-hander Justin Steele (4-7, 3.25 ERA) to the mound against Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta (4-3, 4.08 ERA). Milwaukee trails St. Louis by six games in the NL Central. First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
In the NL Central Thursday the Cardinals beat the Cubs 8-3 and the Phillies shutout the Reds 4-0.
In the Midwest League Thursday night Lansing beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-1 at Fox Cities Stadium. They meet again tonight with the first pitch set for 6:40.
The PGA’s Tour Championship got under way Thursday in Atlanta. Number one seed Scottie Scheffler shot a 5 under 65 and increased his lead over the rest of the field, heading into the next three rounds. The winner pockets $18 million.

JC Tretter’s days blocking defensive linemen are over. He’s not through going up against the NFL. The former Cleveland Browns center and current NFLPA president announced his retirement on Thursday, saying on Twitter that he ended a playing career that started in Green Bay and spanned nine seasons “on my own terms.”
However, Tretter said in an interview that he believes his work with the union played a role in him not being re-signed after the Browns released him in March. The 31-year-old didn’t miss a snap until last season, when he tested positive for COVID-19 before a Christmas game in Green Bay.
Tretter played in Green Bay from 2013-2016.
