Sports for July 7th

P.J. Higgins hit a tiebreaking two-out double off Josh Hader in the ninth inning, and the Chicago Cubs rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday at American Family Field.

After Brewers starter Corbin Burnes threw seven shutout innings, the Cubs broke through against Milwaukee’s bullpen by scoring in each of the last two frames. The Cubs took two of three at Milwaukee and have followed a 10-game losing streak by winning four straight series.

Patrick Wisdom led off the ninth with a walk for Chicago and stole second one out later. Higgins brought home Wisdom by sending Hader’s 1-1 slider just inside the right-field line. The Cubs nearly did more damage against Hader (0-2), who blew his second save of the season, but Christopher Morel hit an inning-ending flyball to the warning track in center.

David Robertson retired the side in the 9th to earn his 12th save in 16 opportunities.

Keston Hiura homered for the Brewers and made a superb catch in left field, where he made a rare start.

The Cubs’ rally began when Morel hit a one-out triple to right-center off Brad Boxberger in the eighth. Morel’s drive went just over the glove of center fielder Jonathan Davis, hit the yellow line at the top of the wall and caromed back into play.  After Boxberger walked pinch-hitter Seiya Suzuki, Rafael Ortega lined an RBI single to right.

Trevor Gott came in for Boxberger and retired Nico Hoerner and Ian Happ.

The Brewers wasted an opportunity to regain the lead in the bottom of the inning. Davis hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on Mychal Givens’ wild pickoff attempt and moved to third when Christian Yelich grounded out. After Willy Adames popped out, Givens (5-0) intentionally walked Rowdy Tellez and struck out Luis Urias to end the threat.

Cubs starter Adrian Sampson struck out five, walked none and allowed four hits and one run in 5 2/3 innings.

Burnes was even better. He struck out 10 and allowed three hits and one walk in his 100-pitch outing. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner has 18 career games with at least 10 strikeouts, tying Yovani Gallardo for the most in Brewers history.

The Brewers are off today before beginning a three-game home series with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday with LHP Aaron Ashby (1-6, 4.60) on the mound.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Mets beat the Reds 8-3, the Yankees clobbered the Pirates 16-0 and the Braves shutout the Cardinals 3-0.  The Brewers are still in front of the Cardinals by three games in the division.

In the Midwest League Wednesday South Bend won at home over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 3-0.  The teams play again tonight with the first pitch at 6:05.

In the Northwoods League Wednesday night the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders started off the second half of the season with a 10-6 road win against the Kokomo Jackrabbits.  The win was the fifth-in-a row for the Dock Spiders and 20th of the season.  The two teams play again tonight at Kokomo Municipal Stadium with the first pitch at 5:35 CDT.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers showed off  his first tattoo on Instagram Wednesday. The tattoo covers his left forearm and contains two lions as well as numerous astrological signs.

“There’s a deep and meaningful story and connection to absolutely each element of this art piece,” said Rodgers in his Instagram caption.

Rodgers says he’ll share more about the tattoo’s meaning some day, but for now, he’s just grateful to the tattoo artist.  Teammates and fans chimed in with a range of reactions — many just wanting to know more about the art’s meaning.

Packers wide receiver Allen Lazard showed his support with a simple, “Yatted up.” Former Packer Kurt Benkert encouraged Rodgers, commenting “Just the beginning.”

Others, such as offensive tackle David Bakhtiari, took the opportunity to joke with Rodgers. “..I hope this is a henna tattoo,” commented Bakhtiari. One fan joined in, saying that the new playbook looked complicated.

Even with the excitement over the fresh ink, this is a quieter off-season for Rodgers compared to last year or even just a few months prior when he hadn’t yet announcedhe would return to the Packers for the 2022 season..

Packers training camp is set to begin in three weeks with some of the practices open to the public.

The Milwaukee Bucks have re-signed forward Bobby Portis Jr. and guards Wesley Matthews at Jevon Carter.  Portis Jr. is coming off a career season in which he averaged career highs in points (14.6), rebounds (9.1) and minutes (28.2) per game.

Matthews played in 49 games (14 starts) with the Bucks last season after signing with the team Dec. 3. Matthews averaged 5.1 points in 20.4 minutes per game. He also started all 12 of Milwaukee’s playoff games and averaged 6.2 points.

Carter was signed by the Bucks last season on Feb. 24 after being waived by the Nets. Carter played in 20 games (2 starts) with Milwaukee and posted averages of 5.6 points, 2.5 assists and 2.2 rebounds in 17.7 minutes per game.

The Cleveland Browns agreed to trade quarterback Baker Mayfield to the Caraolina Panthers on Wednesday for a 2024 conditional draft pick.  The Panthers will pay $4.85 million of Mayfield’s salary, while the Browns will pay $10.5 million, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Mayfield agreed to convert the remainder of his $18.8 million salary into incentives to facilitate the deal, which is pending a physical. Mayfield can earn back that money based on team performance, a source said

The Browns will receive a fourth- or fifth-round pick in 2024, depending on Mayfield’s playing time in Carolina, a source told ESPN. For the pick to go to a fourth-rounder, Mayfield would have to play 70% of the snaps, a league source told ESPN’s David Newton.

Mayfield, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 draft, joins a Panthers team that already has Sam Darnold, the No. 3 overall selection in 2018, on its quarterback depth chart. The Panthers also selected Matt Corral in the third round of this year’s draft.
