Dog Rescued From Lake Winnebago
A dog that was wandering around the area of Harbor View Drive and Mohawk Avenue in the City of Fond du Lac yesterday morning was rescued from Lake Winnebago. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s officials say the older yellow lab mix dog wouldn’t let anyone get near it and eventually went into the lake swimming away from shore. Sheriff’s deputies and a city police officer responded in a Sheriff’s boat and rescued the dog from the water about three-quarter’s of a mile north of the Lakeside Park Marina. The dog was taken back to shore where it was then taken to the Fond du Lac Humane Society. (Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s photo)
Pedestrian Struck By Vehicle In Village Of Fremont
A pedestrian was hit by a vehicle in Waupaca County over the holiday weekend. That person was flown to a hospital. Fremont Police say the accident happened around 11:30 Saturday night on Tustin Road in the village of Fremont. The vehicle was heading north on Tustin Road between the State Highway 10 overpass and Lind Street when it struck a person walking along Tustin Road. Witnesses rendered aid and called 911. The woman driving the vehicle was not injured in the crash. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the mishap.
Fireworks Cancellations
Rain and thunderstorms led to the cancellation of fireworks in several area communities last night. Among those communities were the cities of Ripon, Green Lake, and Fond du Lac. A number of festivities in Green Lake were also cancelled including the boat parade, street parade, and a performance by the 5 Card Studs. The fireworks were postponed until this Saturday or until Harvest Fest on September 24th. Fireworks in Ripon will also be rescheduled. Fireworks in Fond du Lac will be held at Lakeside Park tonight.
Crime Stoppers Program Needs Tips
The Green Lake County Crime Stoppers program is still looking for information about a couple of thefts that have occurred in the past few months. Photos and information were posted about both crimes on the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Facebook page. Chief Deputy Matt Vande Kolk says the latest occurred on Thursday, June 23rd when a man took some plants from a business that uses an honor system to pay for items when no one is there. He says they are also looking for two people who burglarized Chubs Pub at the beginning of May. He says both crimes generated tips but haven’t led them to those responsible yet. State Highway 49 Improvements
Governor Tony Evers recently signed a $1.25 million contract for a resurfacing project on State Highway 49 in Waupaca County. The section to be improved extends from Depot Street in the village of Scandinavia to the south intersection of State Highway 161 in the village of Iola. Construction starts next Monday and Northeast Asphalt of Greenville will be the prime contractor. Improvements will include new asphalt, widening of existing travel lanes, updated pedestrian curb ramps, sidewalk and curb ramp replacement, and a guardrail replacement. State Highway 49 will remain open to traffic, but drivers can expect periodic lane closures controlled by flagging, lane width restrictions and speed limit reductions. Construction is scheduled for completion in September.
What’s For Breakfast
Ripon Area Schools Superintendent Mary Whitrock says they will take advantage of having a new food service director to upgrade the food they offer students for their breakfast program. She says this fall they may enjoy eggs, pancakes, sausage, bagels, hard-boiled eggs, fresh fruit and may even be greeted with the aroma of fresh-baked bread or muffins. She says it’s important that students get off to a good start for their day so they can learn. Whitrock says they will be getting away from some of the processed food they were serving for breakfast.
Oakwood Cemetery Chapel Repairs
The Berlin Common Council recently awarded a bid for repairs to the Oakwood Cemetery Chapel. The bid went to Knock Out Restoration for the interior chapel repairs and exterior sealing and the pillar repairs. The total cost for repairs will be $25,600. Berlin Common Council member Luke Dretske also sits on the Cemetery Board. He says it is an old Chapel and it was falling apart. He says it involves specialized work so they were lucky to find someone to do it. Dretske says money for the repairs will come out of cemetery budget so it won’t impact taxpayers.

SSM Health Ripon Community Hospital will present a free Advance Care Planning community education session on Wednesday, July 27th from 10 am to 2 pm in the hospital’s Commons near the gift shop. You can learn more about making decisions about the care you would like to receive if you become unable to speak for yourself. Run With Magic
The Oshkosh Police Department will be hosting their Annual Mental Health and Wellness Awareness 5K on September 10th at Menominee Park in Oshkosh. The 5K fun run/walk will begin at the park at 9 am. The theme of the run this year is “Run with Magic.” Behavioral Health Officer Sopata and K9 Magic, the department’s therapy dog, will be in the 5K event. By participating in the event, community members help raise money for the department’s Mental Health and Wellness Initiative. Sign up is on line and must be completed by August 5th.
