Rowdy Tellez hit a pair of three-run homers, Corbin Burnes won his fifth straight decison and Milwaukee Brewers beat the Minnesota Twins 10-4 on Wednesday to sweep a two-game series between Central Division leaders.
Tellez homered off a wild Chris Archer (2-5) for a 3-0 lead in the first and against Jharel Cotton for an 8-3 advantage in a five-run fourth. Tellez has 20 homers, one shy of his career high in 2019 with Toronto, and nine multihomer games, including four this season. His only game with more RBIs was on May 4, when he had eight against Cincinnati.
Burnes (8-4) struck out 11 in six innings, reaching double digits for the eighth time this year and 20th in his big league career. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner gave up three runs and five hits while walking none and retiring 14 of his last 15 batters.
Milwaukee opened a 3 1/2-game NL Central lead over second-place St. Louis, which played later Wednesday. Minnesota’s AL Central lead was trimmed to two games over second-place Cleveland, which also played later.
Archer tied his career high with six walks. He allowed six runs and three hits in three innings.
Burnes gave up the early lead in a three-run second that included José Miranda’s ninth homer, back-to-back doubles by Kyle Garlick and Nick Gordon, and Gary Sánchez’s run-scoring single.
Archer walked Milwaukee’s first three batters in the fourth, and Cotten walked Christian Yelich with one out, forcing in the go-ahead run. Willy Adames added a sacrifice fly, and Tellez homered.
Luis Urías added a two-run homer int he fifth off Yennier Cano.
Garlick homered leading off the seventh against Jake McGee.
In other team news, RHP Peter Strzelecki was recalled from Nashville by the Brewers, who optioned LHP Ethan Small to the Triple-A club.
The Brewers are off today before beginning a weekend series in Boston against the Red Sox. RHP Brandon Woodruff (8-3, 3.73) starts Friday at Boston, Milwaukee’s first visit to Fenway Park since 2014.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Reds beat the Rays 5-3 and the Cardinals downed the Blue Jays 6-1. Milwaukee leads St. Louis by three games in the division.
In the Midwest League Wednesday Cedar Rapids beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 7-4 at Fox Cities Stadium. The teams meet again tonight with the first pitch at 6:40.
In the Northwood League Wednesday, the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders exploded for nine runs in the first inning in game one of their doubleheader against the Madison Mallards to set the tone for two big wins, 14-6 and 11-0 in a sweep at Herr-Baker Field on Wednesday. The doubleheader sweep was the first from the Dock Spiders since June 23, 2021, against the Wausau Woodchucks. They improved their record to 29-26 on the year and 10-11 in the second half. The Mallards fell to 23-33 overall, 5-15 in the second half. The Dock Spiders will hit the road Thursday for the start of a two-game series in Green bay against the Rockers. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
Training camp got underway Wednesday for the Packers. Packers GM Brian Gutekunst announced on Wednesday morning that LT David Bakhtiari has had another knee surgery and gave no timetable for the All-Pro to return to practice or play.
Bakhtiari tore his ACL on New Year’s Eve 2020 and has played just a quarter and a half of football since. He is on the Physically Unable to Perform list to start training camp. The offensive lineman told us after practice that his knee finally feels normal. Although he wouldn’t definitively say he will play again, Bakhtiari did say his concern level is low.
He is now nearly 19 months removed from his original knee injury.
“It’s a nightmare, it’s my nightmare that I have to live and I don’t know how many days it’s been,” Bakhtiari said. “I’m just excited to wake up one day. We’re not really in an ACL issue, that’s been actually a long time ago that we put that chapter to bed. It’s just there are other issues that we’re navigating around, things I’m learning. Like I said, it’s just been my nightmare, it’s something that I have to live with.”
The All-Pro signed the richest deal for an offensive lineman in league history just one month before his injury. He rehabbed in 2010, but did not come off the P.U.P. list to start practicing until more than midway through the season. When he finally got on the field in the 2021 regular season finale at Detroit, he left in the 2nd quarter. Bakhtiari did not practice at all during the Packers’ offseason program.
Gutekunst gave updates on his sidelined receivers to start camp as well. Veteran WR Sammy Watkins’ stint on the Non-Football Injury list is expected to be “a very short-term thing” and does not concern Gutekunst. But rookie WR Christian Watson is expected to miss some more meaningful time in training camp after the Packers discovered an issue at OTA’s and decided to take care of things before the season, instead of trying to make in through the season before addressing the issue. ESPN and WBAY Cover 2′s Rob Demovsky report Watson had a knee operation done.
As for the practice itself? The offense got the best of the defense, which came as a surprise to some, including Rodgers. He cautioned that the offense would have to take its lumps in camp against the talented Packers’ defense. But Rodgers’ unit won the day.
Rodgers got things going hitting Juwann Winfree for a deep ball up the right side against great coverage. Rodgers also connected on a deep jump ball to new #1 receiver Allen Lazard.
Green Bay Packers legends are being considered in Canton, as committees discuss the next list of players and coaches recommended to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Former Packers Cecil Isbell and Sterling Sharpe, as well as former coach Mike Holmgren, are moving forward in consideration for the Class of 2023.
The Hall of Fame’s Seniors Committee and its Coach/Contributor Committee have reduced their lists for the Class to 12 finalists each.
After the committees meet in August, three players and one coach will be sent on to the full Hall of Fame Selection Committee, potentially leading to induction in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Isbell played as a tailback, defensive back and halfback in his five years playing with the Green Bay Packers, beginning in 1938. In those five years, he had four Pro Bowl appearances.
Sharpe had a seven-year career with the Packers, starting in 1988. The wide receiver made five Pro Bowls and three first-team All-Pro teams. Sharpe’s 18 touchdown receptions in his final season is still the third best of all time.
Holmgren was the head coach of the Packers from 1992 to 1998. He also coached the Seattle Seahawks from 1999-2008. In his 17 seasons with the NFL, he posted a career record of 174-122.
