Sports for July 26th
From Wayne Mausser
Kyle Freeland pitched four-hit ball over seven innings, Daniel Bard worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth and the Colorado Rockies avoided a four-game sweep with a 2-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night.
Elias Díaz continued his hot streak with a homer that helped the Rockies beat the Brewers for the first time in their last nine meetings. The Rockies had defeated the Brewers seven straight times before this stretch.
After failing to get a runner beyond first base through the first eight innings, the Brewers loaded the bases in the ninth against Bard.
Christian Yelich hit a leadoff single to start the rally. Willy Adames followed with a potential double-play grounder, but the Rockies failed to retire anyone as second baseman Brendan Rodgers bobbled the ball and threw late to first.
Bard retired Andrew McCutchen and Hunter Renfroe before walking Rowdy Tellez to move the tying run to second and put the potential winning run at first. Rodgers then snared Luis Urías’ sinking liner to help Bard earn his 21st save in 23 opportunities.
The Brewers totaled 25 runs while winning the first three games of this series, but they had no answers for Freeland (5-7). The Rockies left-hander struck out seven and allowed one walk. This marked a reversal of fortune for Freeland, who had posted an 8.44 ERA in his three previous July starts.
Freeland needed to be virtually flawless to beat Aaron Ashby, who was making his first start since getting engaged and signing a five-year, $20.5 million contract with the Brewers.
Ashby (2-8) struck out nine and allowed just five hits, two runs and one walk. He worked seven innings and threw 111 pitches, both career highs. The 24-year-old Ashby got engaged on July 18 during the All-Star break. He agreed to terms Saturday on his new contract, which runs through 2027 and includes club options for 2028 and 2029. The deal would be worth $41.5 million over seven seasons if those club options are exercised.
Ashby allowed a leadoff homer in the third inning to Díaz, whose 398-foot drive over the left-field wall came on an 0-1 slider. Díaz is 13 of 27 over his last six games and went 5 of 11 with five RBIs in this series.
The Brewers Open a two-game home series with the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday. The Brewers haven’t named a starting pitcher yet, but the Twins will go with RHP Dylan Bundy (6-4, 4.71). First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Monday Cincinnati pounded Miami 11-2 and the Cubs nipped the Pirates 3-2. The Brewers lead the Cardinals by two games in the division.
There were no games in the Midwest League Monday. Tonight the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers host Cedar Rapids. First pitch is at 6:40 at Fox Cities Stadium.
In the Northwoods League Monday, Noah Magee (Ole Miss) struck out the final five outs of the game to earn the save in a 6-4 Fond du Lac Dock Spiders win over the Green Bay Rockers on Monday night at Herr-Baker Field. The Dock Spiders and Rockers will switch venues tomorrow, moving to Capital Credit Union Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
The Packers reportedly extended the contracts of general manager Brian Gutekunst, head coach Matt LaFleur, and personnel man Russ Ball. This according to a report by ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.
On Monday, team president Mark Murphy would not confirm whether or not the team had reached a deal to extend the contracts of Gutekunst, LaFleur and Ball. Instead saying simply, “I will just say that I feel like they are doing an outstanding job. i am confident that not only matt, but Brian, and Russ ball will continue to be employees for years to come,” said Mark Murphy.
Gutekunst was promoted to general manager back in 2018, and signed a five year contract that was set to expire after this season. Lafleur came to Green Bay a year later and has, along with Gutekunst, helped lead the Packers to a pair of NFC Championship game appearances and back-to-back top seeds in the playoffs. Ball has been a key part of the Packers front office, especially when it comes to the salary cap, and has been with the franchise since 2008.
The terms of the extensions were not immediately available, per Demovsky’s report.
The Packers signed former Raiders special teams ace Dallin Leavitt just a couple days before the start of training camp. Leavitt spent the last three seasons with the Raiders after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2018. That’s the same year Bisaccia was hired as the Raiders’ special teams coordinator.
Leavitt played in 42 games with one start over his four years in Oakland and Las Vegas and racked up 24 tackles and a fumble recovery on special teams. Last year, Leavitt made his first start with the Raiders as a safety, and had a career high 12 tackles on special teams.
Leaders of the Green Bay Packers greeted thousands of team owners inside Lambeau Field for their annual shareholders meeting. About 8,600 Packers shareholders, representing more than 1.6 million shares of Packers stock, were in attendance. A new Packers shareholder says the whole family made the trip to Lambeau Field from Milwaukee just to experience the annual event.
Besides the team’s on-field accomplishments, Packers officials also touted their work off the field, including community outreach efforts, raising money for victims of the vehicle rampage at the Waukesha Christmas parade, and donating to create a Willie Davis financial trading room at University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. CEO Murphy also noted the Packers are catching up with the Chicago Bears for the number of players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Last Friday, the team released its financial statements showing record revenue from the 2021-22 season. The Packers brought in $579 million from national and local revenue and, after $501.3 million in expenses, finished the fiscal year with a $77.7 million profit from its operations. Murphy said the team benefited from a 17th game and a primetime playoff game last season.
Around Lambeau Field, Murphy said much-needed upgrades to the concourse are underway; new video boards are coming, paid for with the latest Packers stock sale which ended earlier this year; and construction of an underground parking structure. Murphy said it’s a 4-5 year project.
The Wisconsin Herd, the G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, acquired Alex Antetokounmpo via trade on Monday, putting the youngest Antetokounmpo brother in the same organization as brothers Giannis and Thanasis.
Alex Antetokounmpo appeared in 15 games for the Toronto Raptors‘ G League affiliate in 2021-22, averaging 2.6 points and 1.3 rebounds on 50% shooting in about 7 minutes per game.
He has yet to make his NBA debut but formed a three-man team with Giannis and Thanasis for the 2022 NBA All-Star Skills Challenge in Cleveland.
Along with Alex Antetokounmpo, the Herd also acquired a second-round pick in the 2023 NBA G League draft in exchange for the player rights to Jalen Lecque.
The 6-foot-8 Alex Antetokounmpo, who turns 21 next month, attended high school in Milwaukee and twice earned all-state honors before leaving to go play in Europe after high school. He spent one season playing internationally before going undrafted and joining the G League in 2021.
Giannis Antetokounmpo has been with the Bucks since the 2013-14 season, and Thanasis joined the organization in 2019.
