Heart Failure Monitoring Program Could Save More Lives

Recent approval by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration will allow for the expansion of a heart failure monitoring program. The CardioMEMs program has been used successfully at the SSM Health Dale Michels Heart & Vascular Care Center in Fond du Lac on more than 90 patients. Dr. Tadeo Diaz Balderrama is a cardiologist with SSM Health’s Fond du Lac Regional Clinic. He says the device, about the size of a grain of rice, is implanted in a patient and monitors differences in increases in pressure before a patient starts feeling symptoms. That means doctors can start treating heart failure before it leads to a hospitalization or emergency room visit. He says more than 6.2 million Americans have heart failure, with diagnoses projected to double by 2030. It is the number #1 cause of hospitalizations in people 65 and older. In the USA alone, the expansion of the CardioMEMs program could have a positive impact for more than a million people suffering from heart failure.

Little Hands On The Farm

Children ages 3 to 10 visiting the Fond du Lac County Fair this week can find out what it is like to be a farm hand. Amy Ries is the Agricultural Programs Director for Envision Greater Fond du Lac. She says the Little Hands on the Farm program in the Recreation Building is tailored for kids giving them chores to do and after they get done just like farmers they go to the market where the deeds they have done and products they turn in earn them Fair food stand money.  She says one of the more popular chores for the Little Hands was scooping up simulated cow pies. The “MOO”turnity Ward and Education Center is open from 10 am to 7 pm through the Fair.
