Giancarlo Stanton homered in his Dodger Stadium homecoming, Byron Buxton followed with another drive and the American League won its ninth straight All-Star Game, beating the National League 3-2 on Tuesday night.
Fans rooting for a tie score after nine innings so they could see a first-time home run derby decide it instead of extra innings didn’t get their wish. Instead, the back-to-back homers in the fourth inning were the difference as the AL boosted its overall edge to 47-43-2.
Nine-time All-Star Clayton Kershaw got the first start of his career for the NL in his home ballpark, with the Dodgers hosting for the first time since 1980. Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani pounded out the game’s first hit on Kershaw’s first pitch.
Framber Valdez of Houston got the win, tossing a scoreless third inning.
AL starter Shane McClanahan of Tampa Bay gave up two runs and four hits. The first-time All-Star, who owns a MLB-leading 1.71 ERA, had allowed four hits or fewer in his last seven starts. McClanahan combined with 10 other pitchers on the five-hitter. Emmanuel Clase struck out the side in the ninth to earn the save. Austin Riley’s single in the eighth was the NL’s only hit after the first inning. Brewers reliever Devin Williams struck out one in a scoreless seventh inning.
A sellout crowd of 52,518 filled Dodger Stadium two years after the third-oldest ballpark in the majors was supposed to host before the game was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
There were no games in the Midwest League or Northwoods League Tuesday and no games are scheduled for today
The Brewers’ 18th-round Draft pick on Tuesday, Jurrangelo Cijntje, is a 19-year-old who was born in The Netherlands, raised in Curaçao and just graduated high school from Champagnat Catholic School in Hialeah, Fla. He is a left-handed pitcher. He is also a right-handed pitcher. And that made him one of the most fascinating players in this year’s Draft class.
The Brewers presumably face a tough sign so late in the Draft, since Cijntje (pronounced SAIN-ja) has a scholarship waiting at Mississippi State. But they took a shot on a pitcher who garnered significant notice at MLB’s recent Draft combine, where he pitched with a 94-96 mph fastball and a 79-80 mph breaking ball with 2,600 rpm from the right side, and an 88-92 mph heater and a 75-76 mph breaker with 2,400 rpm from the left, according to MLB.com prospect guru Jim Callis.
Serge Ibaka is staying with the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks announced Tuesday that they have re-signed the 32-year-old center, who came to Milwaukee as part of a four-team deal at the Feb. 10 trade deadline. Terms of the deal weren’t released. Ibaka averaged 7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 17.8 minutes in 19 games with the Bucks last season.
LerRoy Butler will be first up at this year’s Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony. The hall of fame released the order of inductees on Tuesday.
The Green Bay Packers legend kicks off the group of eight inductees. Butler will be followed by Melanie Mills, speaking on behalf of her late husband Sam; Richard Seymour; Art McNally; Tony Boselli; Bryant Young; Elaine Anderson, speaking on behalf of her late brother Cliff Branch; and Dick Vermeil. McNally’s remarks will be delivered by prerecorded video.
The enshrinement ceremony takes place Aug. 6 at 11 a.m. CDT. It will be broadcast live on ESPN and NFL Network.
Wisconsin wildlife officials say they don’t know when they’ll release their new wolf management plan after initially saying the document would come out this spring.
The Department of Natural Resources’ current wolf management plan dates back to 1999 and calls for capping the statewide population at 350 animals. Wolf hunt supporters have repeatedly cited that number as justification for higher quotas. The DNR’s latest population estimates, compiled over the winter of 2020-21, put the number of wolves roaming the state at 1,126.
DNR officials began working a stakeholder committee last year to draft a new plan. The department’s timeline called for releasing the draft for public review in the spring of 2022. The department has yet to put out anything and DNR spokeswoman Sarah Hoye said she didn’t have a release date. She added in a follow-up message later Tuesday that department staff hope to have a draft out to the public by fall. She didn’t offer a date.
