The Brewers opened their weekend series with a win last night in San Francisco over the Giants, 3- 2 in 10 innings. Mlwaukee scored the winning run on a two-out infield single by Jonathan Davis, scoring pinch runner Christian Yelich. Corbin Burnes struck out 10 over seven innings and in doing so set a Brewers record. It was his 19th career game with double digit strikeouts, surpassing Yovani Gallardo, who logged 18 in his eight-year Milwaukee career. Reliever Devin Williams saved the game in the 10 inning and extended his streak of consecutive scoreless outings to 26, spanning 24 2/3 innings. With one out in the 10th, Mike Yastrrzemski, who started the inning as an automatic runner then and stole third. But Williams then struck out Austin Wynns and induced a flyout from LaMonte Wade Jr., securing the NL Central leading Brewers 50th win.
The Giants took a 2-0 lead in the second inning but the Brewers responded with single runs in the 4th and 6th innings. Andrew McCutchen and Willy Adames had the other RBI’S. as Milwaukee finished with 13 hits. Trevor Gott threw 2/3 of an inning to pick up the win to improve to 2-2. Giantts starter Carlos Rodon went five innings, giving up one run on eight hits, while striking out seven and walking three. Camillo Doval (3-5) pitched two innings and took the loss.
After missing the two-game series in Minnesota because of back tightness, Christian Yelich appeared as a pinch-runner in the 10th and scored the winning run.
The two teams meet again tonight. The first pitch is at 9:15 CDT and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Thursday Miami nipped Pittsburgh 3-2, the Reds over the Yankees 7-6, the Mets shutout the Cubs 8-0 and the Dodgers blanked St. Louis 4-0. The Brewers increased their lead over the Cardinals to three games in the division.
In the Midwest League Thursday night West Michigan won at home over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8-7. They meet again tonight with the first pitch set for 5:35 CDT.
In Northwoods League action the Lakeshore Chinoooks beat the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders 8-4. The teams meet again tonight at Herr-Baker Field with the first pitch at 6:35.
Second round action in The Open at St. Andrews is underway. Cameron Young shot an 8-under 64 to take a two-shot lead over Rory McIlroy, who was one shot in front of Cameron Smith, entering today’s second round. Tiger Woods shot a six-over to finish with a 78 and is in danger of missing the cut.
