Powerboat Operator Charged

The 52-year-old Oshkosh man suspected of hitting a paddlewheel party boat with his 45-foot powerboat and fleeing the scene made his initial court appearance in Winnebago County court Wednesday. Jason Lindemann is charged with 12 counts of recklessly endangering safety and 11 counts of failing to render aid. Bond was set at $10,000 cash. He was also ordered to enter a 24/7 alcohol program.  Lindemann owns Dockside Tavern and prosecutors say he was seen on camera there drinking prior to the crash on the Fox River in Oshkosh Saturday night. But Lindemann’s lawyer points out it can’t be proven whether alcohol was in the glass. Lindemann turned himself in two days after the incident. Forty-three passengers and crews were on the Riverboat. Seven suffered only minor injuries.

Referendum Possibility

With the possibility of a deficit of nearly $1.6 million for the 2023-24 school year the Ripon Area School District is considering ways of lowering debt and raising revenues. District Superintendent Mary Whitrock says that could include restructuring debt from a previous operating referendum and the possibility of operational referendum in November which they would do if they can keep the tax rate about the same. She says they plan to send out a survey to voters in the District to gauge whether there would be support for a referendum. She says the mill rate this past year was $8.12 per thousand dollars of value on a property the lowest rate it has been at for many years.

Ripon Senior Center Furniture Purchase

The Ripon Common Council this week approved a $62,000 purchase agreement with Excel Engineering for furniture for the new Senior Center that is being built. That was done with the stipulation that local vendors be contacted to see if they could match that offer first. City Administrator Adam Sonntag says the agreement with Excel would be for furniture that can stand up to constant use by Senior Citizens and would match the color scheme and interior design of the new center. Alderman John Splitt raised the question about whether local vendors had been approached and Sonntag assured the Council they were not left out of the process. But Sonntag says there is a short time frame for ordering the particular furniture and how long the prices would be guaranteed. He says the price is still well below the $75,000 they had budgeted for that particular project.

Ad Hoc Committee Will Consider Recommendations For Golf Course’s Future

An ad-hoc committee will be put together to hash out recommendations for the future of the Fond du Lac County-owned Rolling Meadows Golf Course in Fond du Lac. County Executive Sam Kaufman says about 50 people attended a meeting of the County Board’s UW-Extension Education, Agriculture, and Recreation Committee Tuesday at the Rolling Meadows Golf Course meeting room. He says they heard some good comments from the public and the committee gave the go ahead to have him approach County Board Chairperson Steve Abel about forming an ad-hoc committee.  Over the years the golf course has accrued nearly $2.6 million in debt and would have operated at a deficit last year without the subsidizing of sales tax money. Kaufman says the committee will consider raising fees, possibly building a clubhouse that could be open year-round for events, and other ideas. He says no decisions will be reached in haste because the golf course provides quality of life for county residents.
