Hit And Run Driver Arrested For OWI

A 29-year-old Oshkosh man involved in a hit-and-run accident in Outagamie County was arrested in Winnebago County Tuesday night. The vehicle driven by Victor Santos was all over the road and was located by using DOT traffic cameras. A trooper from the State Patrol’s Fond du Lac post pulled the vehicle over on the off-ramp from Interstate 41 southbound to State Highway 76. Santos failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for operating while intoxicated-first offense with an occupant under 16 years old. He was also charged with a child safety restraint violation and operating without a license. The time of the incident was 6:44 pm.

Standoff At Clintonville

Police in Clintonville took a 32-year-old man into custody following a standoff at a home on North Main Street Monday night. It started out as a domestic disturbance but family members said he was “very intoxicated” and was possibly armed with guns. Police tried to make contact with the man by phone for several hours but he did not comply. The Waupaca County Sheriff’s SWAT Team was sent to the scene. At 12:47 Tuesday morning, nearly 5 ½ hours after the incident began, the man was taken into custody. He was booked into the county jail on a Department of Corrections warrant. Additional charges are being referred to the Waupaca County District Attorney’s Office.

Lawsuit Filed Challenging State’s Abortion Law

State Attorney General Josh Kaul has filed a challenge to the state’s 1849 law banning nearly all abortions in the state. Yesterday a suit was filed in Dane County Circuit Court. It seeks to make the state’s abortion law unenforceable. The three defendants are three Republicans-State Senate President Chris Kapenga, Senate Majority Leader Devin LaMahieu, and State Assembly Speaker Robin Vos. The state law was set to go into effect after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade last Friday turning abortion laws back to the states. Wisconsin’s law outlaws abortions even in the case of rape or incest, but allows it when it is needed to save the mother’s life.

MPTC Referendum

Moraine Park Technical College President Bonnie Baerwald says a survey sent out to voters in the Moraine Park District helped define parameters for a possible referendum in November. She says originally they asked about whether voters would support five projects at a total cost of $75 million. But those respondents said they were more likely to support four projects at a cost of $55 million. Those projects would include major renovations and additions to the Trade and Manufacturing and Health Wings at their Fond du Lac Campus a renovation and addition for their trade and manufacturing center at their West Bend campus and construction of a Regional Training Center for firefighters in Beaver Dam. The next step is a public hearing which will be held at 5:15 pm Monday, July 11th at Moraine Park’s Fond du Lac campus.

Green Lake Fourth Of July Fireworks Fundraising Goal Met

Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lisa Meier says they are extremely grateful to those who donated so that they could put on fireworks display for the Fourth of July. She says another chamber had to cancel a celebration earlier this month because they learned the fireworks they purchased were stuck on a ship. She says she checked right away when they heard that story but they had purchased them well in advance and they met their fundraising goal of $20,000 for the fireworks. She got a call Monday from two families that live on the lake who said they would come up with whatever she needed in her fundraising goal for the fireworks. The Light Up the Lake Fireworks will be shot off at dusk next Monday from a barge near Hattie Shorewood beach.

Bird Flu Restrictions Lifted

Just in time for fair season restrictions on the showing and transporting of poultry have been lifted. During a bout with avian flu over 4 million chickens in Wisconsin had to be destroyed which also inflated egg prices. State Senator Joan Ballweg says wild birds infected with the flu that brought it into the state have migrated north of us. She says there has not been another outbreak in well over 30 days. She says youngsters who have raised poultry to show at various fairs will be able to do so but there might be restrictions on who can move through the barns that they are stored in.

Operation Dry Water

The Dodge and Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Offices will be joining the U.S. Coast Guard, Wisconsin DNR, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and others in the annual Operation Dry Water campaign this weekend. It is a coordinated campaign to educate boaters about the dangers of boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Operation Dry Water is July 2nd through the 4th. Boaters will see an increase in outreach, education and enforcement surrounding boating under the influence. The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office reminds boaters to always boat sober and to wear a life jacket when on or around the water. The risk of serious injury is the same for operators and passengers when drinking. Last year law enforcement officers across the nation removed 638 impaired operators from waterways during the Operation Dry Water weekend.
