Update On Fatal Washington County Traffic Accident

Authorities have identified the 30-year-old Mayville woman who died with her 1-year-old son in a three-vehicle crash in Washington County Wednesday morning. Sheriff Martin Schulteis says Casey Lynn Schwartz was heading south on State Highway 164 at Elmwood Road when her vehicle was rear-ended. The collision pushed her car into the northbound lane where it was hit by a northbound vehicle. She and her infant son died at the scene. Those in the other vehicles involved in the accident in the Village of Richfield required medical attention as well.                        

Steven Avery Moved To Fox Lake Correctional

The man convicted of killing free-lance photographer Teresa Halbach at a salvage yard in Manitowoc County for the 2005 murder has been moved from a maximum security prison to a medium security prison. Wisconsin Department of Corrections records show Steven Avery was moved from Waupun Correctional Institution on June 21st to Fox Lake Correctional Institution. Avery is serving a life sentence for the murder of the Hilbert woman. Only six percent of inmates at Fox Lake are serving life sentences.  Avery is appealing his conviction of First Degree Intentional Homicide for Halbach’s murder. Previous appeals on a variety of claims have all failed to overturn his conviction.

Montello Man Charged For FDL County Chase

A $500 cash bond was set for a 58-year-old Montello man facing a fifth OWI and eluding an officer charges for a recent traffic chase in Fond du Lac and Winnebago counties. Michael Welch was charged in Fond du Lac County court and has a preliminary hearing on August 12th. On June 13th a state trooper responded to Interstate 41 at Lost Arrow Road for an erratic driver complaint. Welch’s vehicle failed to yield. The vehicle came to a stop on I-41 northbound south of Highway 21 after running over a tire deflation device set out by a Winnebago County Sheriff’s deputy. Welch failed field sobriety tests and was taken into custody.

Unemployment Rates Remain Low

Unemployment rates in 66 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties decreased or remained the same for May. According to Federal Labor statistics Fond du Lac County’s jobless rate increased slightly while Dodge County’s decreased slightly. Both counties had 2.4 percent unemployment rates last month. Winnebago County’s rate held steady at 2.5 percent. Waupaca County’s jobless rate was 2.8 percent, Green Lake County’s was 3 percent, and Waushara County had an unemployment rate of 3.1 percent for the month. The cities of Oshkosh and Fond du Lac both saw their rates increase slightly to 2.5 and 2.6 percent respectively. 

FDL County Board Vacancy

Fond duLac County Board Chairperson Steven Abel is accepting applications from residents who may be interested in serving as a county supervisor representing District 7. The district includes Town of Oakfield, Ward 1; Town of Waupun, Wards 1 and 2; Village of Oakfield, Ward 1 and City of Waupun, Wards 10 through 12. You must live within that district. The appointment will fill the unexpired term of Sam Kaufman. The term expires on April 16th of 2024. You must be a U.S. citizen and 18 or older. Kids And COVID Vaccine

COVID-19 vaccine for children 6 months to 5-years-old is finally becoming available. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker formerly of the Ripon COVID-19 Task Force says that is good news because it is the one segment of our population that hasn’t had access to vaccine. He says the state ordered 48,000 doses, but people should check with their physician to see if they are available. He says he knows some families that have been eagerly waiting to have their young children vaccinated against COVID, but not everyone feels that way according to one news poll. That poll found 18 percent of respondents said they would get their children vaccinated right away, 40 percent said they would wait and see, while the remaining 42 percent are saying probably not.

Breakfast On The Farm Sunday

Dodger Acres in Rosendale is the site for this Sunday’s Breakfast on the Farm. It’s staged each year by Envision Greater Fond du Lac’s Agri-Business Council at a host farm. Dodger Acres is a fifth-generation family farm with 185 cows and a robotic milking parlor. Envision President and CEO Sadie Vander Velde says the breakfast is a good opportunity to see how a dairy farm works. Hours for the breakfast are from 8 am to noon. Tickets for the Breakfast on the Farm are $9 in advance and $10 at the farm. Children 5 and under will eat for free. Advance tickets are available at the Envision offices in Fond du Lac, Bluemke’s Hardware Store in Rosendale and a number of banks. They are also available on the Envision website through their events tab.

Princeton Fourth Of July Celebration This Weekend

Princeton’s Fourth of July Celebration will be held at the Princeton City Park tomorrow from 5 pm until after the fireworks. Traditionally the community holds their celebration the weekend before the Fourth of July. Carol Siddall is the President of the Princeton Area Community Fund. She says there will be games, a food booth, beer tent, live music by Fall Back a band out of West Bend, and of course fireworks at dusk. She says they appreciate donations and sponsorships, which helps them pay the costs for staging the free event. She notes the cost of fireworks went up considerably this year. She says the base costs went up 25 percent because of supply chain issues. You will have to pay for any food or beer that you pick up during the celebration.  Those who would like to donate to the Princeton Area Community Fund can mail their donation to PACF at P.O. Poy Sippi Days

The Poy Sippi Lions Club will hold Poy Sippi Days at the Poy Sippi Community Park Saturday. The event will run from 10 am to 7 pm. It will be feature basket raffles, 50/50 raffles, local vendors, children’s activities, a cornhole tournament, and music. Old Time Sounds will perform polka music from 11 am to 2 pm, then Double Down will perform from 3 to 6:30 pm. Chad Strehlow is the new president of the Lions Club. He says proceeds from Poy Sippi Days go toward a number of different causes they support including a Lions Camp for the blind in Rosholt, the Hope House, a local food pantry, and two $500 scholarships for High School seniors. As part of the fund the Poy Sippi Library will host a Movie Night tonight with yard games from 6 to 7 pm then show the move “Clifford the Big Red Dog” at 7 pm.

Grothman Office Location Change

Congressman Glenn Grothman has a new location for his regional office in Fond du Lac. The Sixth District Congressman can now be found at 525 North Peters Avenue, Suite 700. The phone number for that office is 920-907-0624. The change went into effect on Tuesday.
