Nolan Gorman went 4 for 4 with two solo homers and four RBIs as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-2 on Tuesday night to regain a share of the NL Central lead.
The Cardinals and Brewers are both 39-31 after splitting the first two matchups of this four-game series. St. Louis stopped the Brewers’ four-game winning streak.
Gorman broke a 2-all tie and put the Cardinals ahead for good with a homer to center off Chi Chi González (0-1) in the fourth inning. He extended the lead to 4-2 with a drive over the right-field wall against Miguel Sánchez in the seventh. Since making his major-league debut May 20, Gorman has six homers in 29 games. His first five all traveled at least 400 feet, including his 428-foot shot in the fourth. The streak ended when his seventh-inning homer went 396 feet.
Zack Thompson (1-0), Drew VerHagen, Giovanny Gallegos and Ryan Helsley combined to allow just one hit and one walk in six innings of scoreless relief. The Brewers had just four hits.
Gorman’s big night started with a two-out RBI single in the first off Chi Chi Gonzalez as the Cardinals grabbed a 2-0 lead. Milwaukee’s Willy Adames tied it in the bottom half with a two-run homer off Jack Flaherty.
But the Brewers failed to capitalize on Flaherty’s control issues. Flaherty retired just one of his first five batters — allowing Adames’ homer and three walks — but avoided further damage in his three-inning stint by continually pitching out of trouble. Flaherty matched a career high with five walks.
González (0-1) allowed three runs and four hits over four innings with two strikeouts and one walk in his Brewers debut after getting claimed off waivers from Minnesota a week ago. González was starting in place of Aaron Ashby, who went on the injured list Monday due to inflammation in his left arm.
RHP Adam Wainwright (5-5, 3.06 ERA) starts for the Cardinals and LHP Eric Lauer (6-2, 3.57) gets the call for the Brewers as this four-game series continues Wednesday night. First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Dodgers beat the Reds 8-2 and the Pirates downed the Cubs 7-1. The Brewers and Cardinals are tied for first place in the division.
The Angels Shohei Ohtani hit two homers and drove in eight runs but it wasn’t enough as they lost to the Royals 12-11 in 11 innings. Ohtani’s eight RBIs were the most by an Angels player since Garret Anderson had a franchise-record 10 RBIs against the Yankees on Aug. 21, 2007.
In the Midwest League Tuesday night the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost at home to Quad Cities 13-5. The T-Rats drop to 34-29 while Quad Cities improves to 26-38. The teams meet again tonight at Fox Cities Stadium with the first pitch set for 6:40.
In the Northwoods League Tuesday night the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders lost at home to the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 5-4. The win saw the Rafters (20-2) extend their lead to 8.5 games over the Dock Spiders (11-10), who sit in second-place in the Great Lakes West Division. The teams meet again tonight at Wisconsin Rapids ith the first pitch slated for 6:35.
Brooks Koepka has withdrawn from this week’s Travelers Championship, the PGA Tour announced Tuesday night. The four-time major champion is joining the LIV Golf Invitational Series, sources confirmed to ESPN earlier Tuesday. Koepka, 32, is one of the highest-profile players to join the breakaway circuit, which is being funded by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and is fronted by two-time Open winner Greg Norman.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkoski is again calling it a career. The 33-year old Gronkowski announced his retirement Tuesday via social media. Gronkowski, a 2010 second-round draft pickout of Arizona, had previously retired after the 2018 season with the New England Patriots because of injuries. He was four-time Super Bowl champ.
The Stanley Cup Finals continue tonight as Tampa Bay hosts Colorado. The Avalanche lead 2-1 in that best-of-seven game series.
