Rookie Christopher Morel drove in Jason Heyward with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 on Wednesday night.  Heyward started on second base and moved up on a groundout by Nick Madrigal. Morel then drove him in with a fly to left against Hoby Milner (2-1) and got mobbed by his teammates in the infield after the winning run scored.  Morel extended his club record by reaching base in his first 15 major league games, when he walked and scored in the first.

Willson Contreras singled twice, drove in a run and scored one after hitting home runs in his previous two games.

Kyle Hendricks went five innings, allowing three runs and six hits, after losing his previous two starts.

Five relievers combined to shut out Milwaukee the rest of the way, with Mark Leiter Jr. (1-1) getting out of a tough spot in the 10th.

The Brewers had a runner on third with one out in the 10th after Jace Peterson advanced on a wild pitch. He was thrown out trying to score on Kolten Wong’s fielder’s choice grounder to second baseman Madrigal. Tyrone Taylor flied to right, and the Cubs salvaged a four-game split with the NL Central leaders after getting swept in a doubleheader on Monday.

Jason Alexander lasted seven innings after being called up from Triple-A Nashville to make his major league debut. The 29-year-old right-hander gave up three runs — two earned — and seven hits.

Peterson added three hits, scored a run and drove in one. He tripled and came around in the third, and knocked an RBI double off the center-field wall in the fifth against Hendricks to give Milwaukee a short-lived 3-2 lead. He also doubled off the right-field ivy in the seventh.

RHP Adrian Houser (3-5, 3.69 ERA) gets the ball as the Brewers open a seven-game homestand tonight against San Diego.  LHP Sean Manaea (2-3, 4.02) starts for the Padres. First pitch is at 6:40 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Cardinals beat the Padres 5-2, the Red Sox over the Reds 7-1 and the Pirates beat the Dodgers 8-4.  Milwaukee’s lead over St. Louis is just two games in the division.

In the Midwest League Wednesday Peoria shutout the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-0.  The teams meet again tonight at Fox Cities Stadium with the first pitch at 6:40.

For the third straight game, the Dock Spiders scored in the opening inning, taking a 1-0 lead off an RBI single from Kyte McDonald (Alvin C.C.) for his first hit of the year. The Rockers then responded to take the lead at 3-1 with a three run third inning.

The Dock Spiders then batted around for the first time on the night in the third, scoring five runs while sending 10 men to the plate to take a 6-3 lead. Alejandro Macario (Nova Southeastern) started the inning off with a triple, and was brought in by an RBI ground-rule double from Connor Manthey (Bradley). Cole Messina (South Carolina) also brought home two with a single.

Green Bay would claw back with two in the bottom half, but McDonald ended the inning with a leaping catch at the right-centerfield wall to steal an extra-base hit with the tying run on base.

The Rockers would then retake the lead with a two out grand slam in the sixth to go up 9-7. Nick Mitchell (Western Illinois) would then tie it up the next half inning.

In the ninth, the Dock Spiders sent 11 men to the plate and scored six runs, tallying a season-high 15 runs on the night. Tommy Stevenson (Missouri Southern State) worked a bases loaded walk, his fourth of the night, to give the Dock Spiders a 10-9 lead. Messina also tallied two more RBI with a single to collect a career-high four on the night. Garret Houston (Georgia-Gwinnett), would finish the night with four strikeouts in the final 1.2 innings, earning his first win since his first appearance since the 2021 Coastal Plain League season

The Dock Spiders return home to take on the Rockers on Thursday, June 2, at 11:35 a.m. at Herr-Baker Field.

Aaron Rodgers can add another back-to-back title to his resume. This time it’s not an MVP. Instead the Packers quarterback helped win ‘The Match’ for the second straight year.  In 2021, Rodgers and Bryson DeChambeau bested Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and Phil Mickelson. This year Rodgers teamed up with Brady to take on young QBs Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen in Las Vegas, Nev.

A birdie by Rodgers on the first hole helped the ‘old guys’ take an early one up lead in the match. They added another birdie on the second to take an early two-hole lead.

The young guys rallied thanks to a couple of birdies by Mahomes, and were one up down the stretch of the 12-hole competition.  A birdie putt by Brady on the 11th hole tied the match heading to the last. Then just like last year Rodgers was standing over a putt that could seal the victory.  The Packers quarterback drained the birdie putt to give him and Brady the victory. Ultimately the real winners were Feeding America, who received enough money from the event to donate 10,258,000 meals.

The NBA Finals begin tonight in Golden State where the Warriors host the Boston Celtics. The Warriors have won six championships, with the last three coming in 2015, 2017 and 2018. Boston has won 17 NBA titles in 21 Finals appearances. The last time the Celtics made the Finals was in 2010, where the lost to the Lakers in seven games. The last time they won a Championship was in 2008, when they beat the Lakers, which was the franchise’s first championship since 1985-86.
