Sports for June 17th

Mark Canha hit a two-run homer and the New York Mets threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the ninth inning Thursday night to preserve a 5-4 comeback victory over the scuffling Milwaukee Brewers.

After both starting pitchers exited with injuries in the middle innings, the Mets took advantage of a costly throwing error by first baseman Rowdy Tellez to score the go-ahead run in the eighth.

J.D. Davis led off with a single against Brent Suter (1-1) and dashed to third when Tellez — Davis’ high school teammate — fielded Luis Guillorme’s grounder and made a wild throw into left field trying to get a force at second. One out later, pinch-runner Starling Marte scored from third on Nick Plummer’s RBI groundout when Tellez threw to second and got the force this time.

Hunter Renfroe singled to start the ninth against closer Edwin Díaz. One out later, pinch-hitter Tyrone Taylor looped a double to shallow right field and Renfroe tried to score all the way from first. Plummer tracked down the ball at the low retaining wall and made a one-hop throw to first baseman Pete Alonso, who relayed to catcher Tomás Nido in time for him to tag Renfroe in the face as he slid by. With Taylor on third, Díaz then struck out Christian Yelich for his 13th save. Drew Smith (1-1) worked a scoreless eighth for the win.

Jeff McNeil and Nido had RBI singles for the Mets, who erased a 4-1 deficit.

Christian Yelich hit a leadoff homer in a four-run fourth for the Brewers that included Omar Narváez’s two-run single. Milwaukee dropped two of three in the series and has lost 10 of 12 overall.  The Brewers outhit the Mets 11-7.

Brewers left-hander Aaron Ashby was removed as a precaution in the fifth because of left forearm tightness.  Ashby gave up four runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings while striking out five and walking three.  Brent Suter (1-1) took the loss.

Brewers RHP Brandon Woodruff, experiencing numbness in his three middle fingers due to Raynaud’s syndrome, is scheduled to throw about 50 pitches in a rehab start Saturday for Triple-A Nashville. Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said Woodruff will need multiple rehab outings before rejoining the rotation. RHP Trevor Gott (right groin) is scheduled to throw the first of multiple bullpens in Cincinnati this weekend.

The Brewers are in Cincinnati tonight to start a three-game weekend series.  Lefthander Eric Lauer (5-2, 3.36 ERA) starts for Milwaukee against Reds righthander  Hunter Greene (3-7, 5.10 ERA).  First pitch is at 5:40 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Thursday, there was just one game as the Padres edged the Cubs 5-4. The Brewers trail the Cardinals by two games in the division.

In the Midwest League Thursday Great Lakes won at home over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 13-4. The T-Rats drop to 34-25 while Great Lakes improves to 35-25.  The teams play again tonight with the first pitch at 6:05.

Both the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders and the Madison Mallards used 10-plus run wins to split a doubleheader at Warner Park in Madison, Wisconsin on Thursday. The Dock Spiders went to 9-8 on the year after the split, second in the Great Lakes West Division. Madison went to 8-9, a half-game behind the Dock Spiders in the standings.

The Dock Spiders return home to Herr-Baker Field for a one-night homestand against the Lakeshore Chinooks on Friday. It marks the first Fireworks Friday presented by Kwik Trip, the first 500 fans receive a Weaver bobblehead and it’s Down Syndrome Acceptance Night.

The Golden State Warriors are NBA champions once again, topping the Boston Celtics 103-90 on Thursday night for their fourth title in the last eight seasons.

Stephen Curry scored 34 points and was named the NBA Finals MVP as the Warriors claimed the franchise’s seventh championship overall. And this one completed a journey like none other, after a run of five consecutive finals, then a plummet to the bottom of the NBA, and now a return to greatness just two seasons after having the league’s worst record.

For Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala, it’s a fourth championship. The first three rings came in 2015, 2017 and 2018, when Golden State was dynastic and made five consecutive trips to the finals.

Jaylen Brown led the Celtics with 34 points. Al Horford added 19. Jayson Tatum finished with 13 points, but shot just 6 of 18 from the field. Boston also committed 22 turnovers, dropping to 1-8 this postseason when committing 16 or more.  Boston trailed by as many as 22 points but but went on a 16-4 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 76-66 entering the fourth.

The State Baseball Tournament ended Thursday at Fox Cities Stadium.  In the D-1 title game Milton beat Bay Port 11-1.  In the D-2 title game Denmark won its second straight title with a 6-5  victory over Jefferson.

The U.S. Open got underway Thursday at Brookline, Massachusetts. Adam Hadwin shot a 4-under 66 to lead five other golfers including Rory McIlroy, by one shot. Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose are two shots off

while Justin Thomas and Adam Scott are three shots behind.
