Storm Damage Update
State officials say Wednesday night’s storms caused damage from Monroe to Marinette counties. Nearly two dozen county and tribal emergency management offices reported tree, building and other property damage, along with numerous downed utility lines. A state of emergency was declared by Monroe and Brown Counties and the Stockbridge-Munsee nation. No statewide emergency declaration has been requested. Monroe County reported two injuries related to overturned semis, but no major injuries or fatalities have been reported to the state. Thousands still remain without power. Customers with questions about timelines for restoration of service should contact their utility provider. As clean-up continues, residents are encouraged to document any damage to their property and check local government websites to see how officials would like you to report that information. MPTC Takes First Step Towards 55 Million Dollar Referendum
The Moraine Park Technical College District Board passed a resolution Wednesday stating the intent to borrow $55 million to enhance campus learning spaces to meet future student and regional workforce needs. The resolution is the first formal step toward a potential referendum in the November election. If successful, the $55 million referendum will allow Moraine Park to borrow funds to enhance and grow Moraine Park facilities. A survey sent out to 10,000 MPTC district community members showed support for a $55 million referendum. Under the proposed facilities enhancement plan, annual property taxes would increase by $21 per $100,000 of property value for the next 20 years. The next step is a public hearing which will be held at 5:15 pm Monday, July 11th at Moraine Park’s Fond du Lac campus.
Oshkosh Bridge Closure
It will be at least another 9 weeks before the Oregon/Jackson Street bridge reopens in Oshkosh. It has been closed since May 26th after equipment was discovered to be worn. Engineers discovered the problem during a routine inspection. They say the components in the gear teeth that help raise and lower the bridge were worn. State Department of Transportation officials say new parts need to be manufactured. That is expected to take about eight weeks depending on supply chain issues. It will take about a week to install the parts after they are secured. Drivers can cross the Fox River using the Main Street or Wisconsin Street bridges while that bridge is closed.
Equity Bill Goes Too Far
Congressman Glenn Grothman says Democrats seem to be obsessed with finding out the sexual preference of Americans. Wednesday he voted against the “Equity in Banking” bill. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah says if it passes loan forms filled out by banks would require information on your racial background, sexual preference, and what loans you’re already receiving. He says loans shouldn’t be based on that type of information. The bill passed and goes on to the Senate. The oversight committee he sits on also heard about a bill in which government forms for schools would require the school district to list the sexual preference of students as young as five or six years old. He says that also goes too far.
Be Considerate Of Others During Extreme Heat
Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says when it is hot it is easy to lose sight of all but your own needs but we also have to think about the welfare of others. She says temperatures in a car can rise quickly even if windows are cracked open so make sure not to leave your kids or pets in an unattended vehicle. She also recommends checking on the welfare of elderly or ill neighbors who do not have the benefit of an air-conditioned residence or apartment. Another round of 90 degree plus weather is forecast for the beginning of next week.
