Lily Peters Murder Suspect In Court

Lily Peters

A criminal complaint for the 14-year-old boy suspected of raping and murdering 10-year-old Lily Peters of Chippewa Falls will become available in the next few days. But it will be heavily redacted to remove the names and ages of the suspect and the victim, even though information about the victim was released during a search for her and the subsequent discovery of her body. However, search warrants executed during the investigation will not be unsealed. That request was made by both the suspect’s attorney Michael Cohen and Chippewa County District Attorney Wade Newell. The boy made a brief appearance in court Thursday. He is being charged as an adult, but his defense team could make a motion to move the case to juvenile court. He is being held in a juvenile detention facility on a $1 million cash bond. A status conference is scheduled in the court case on June 24th.

Calumet County Residents Conned

Calumet County Sheriff’s officials say some residents in the Village of Harrison were conned out of $78,000. Each of the victims received phone calls instructing them to download software on either their computer or mobile device. That allowed the callers to gain access to the victim’s online banking and other investment accounts. The suspects then convert whatever funds they access to cryptocurrency which is difficult to track and is usually sent overseas. The Sheriff’s Office recommends never allowing a third party to access your computer or mobile device and simply to hang up.

It is the last stretch of the 19 mile project that expanded the divided-highway to 4 lanes and realigned it. Highway 23 will remain open to traffic throughout construction with long-term lane closures during work. Access to side roads and adjacent properties will be maintained through the duration of the project which should be finished by the end of July.

As of Thursday 55.9 percent of the County’s residents had received at least one dose of the vaccine, 53.4 percent had completed the vaccine series, and 28.2 percent had received a booster shot.

MPTC And Lakeland University Reach Articulation Agreement

Moraine Park Technical College President Bonnie Baerwald and Lakeland University President Dr. Beth Borgen signed an articulation agreement this week. The agreement allows those who get an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree at MPTC to transfer those credits to Lakeland University toward a 4-year degree. That would allow those students to start at Lakeland as a confirmed junior saving thousands of dollars annually compared to private or public 4-year college. Baerwald says they hope to put similar agreements in place with other four-year universities including the UW-Oshkosh, UW-Green Bay, UW-Milwaukee, and Marian University. She says it took about eight months to put the agreement together and they had to get permission from the UW Board of Regents last month because of statutory language imbedded in state statute since the early 1970s.  Baerwald says partnerships with other schools are nothing new for MPTC because they have had some in place with 4-year private schools for years.
