Keeping Kids Safe
A state legislator from Altoona says there was a lot of panic in the area when it was announced that 10-year-old Lily Peters was murdered in the nearby community of Chippewa Falls last week. Jesse James represents the 68th State Assembly District and is a police officer for the village of Cadott. He says at his daughter’s school the school’s administrators didn’t want the children to go outside, but allowed it if they agreed to remain in sight. James is working on legislation that would create an alert for missing children who don’t meet the criteria for an Amber Alert. He says he has taught his children to report any person or vehicle that seem out of place or suspicious. He says if they have cell phones tell them to take pictures of those vehicles and their license plates.
Pedestrian Traffic Complaint
With pedestrian traffic increasing as the weather improves Ripon Police Chief Bill Wallner is asking drivers and pedestrians to watch out for each other. He reminds motorists that when a pedestrian enters a controlled crosswalk they have the right-of-way but as such should also pay attention to their surroundings. He says on the other hand pedestrians do not have the right-of-way at uncontrolled crosswalks and should yield to traffic. Wallner says the number one traffic complaint they receive has to do with vehicles not yielding to pedestrians in controlled crosswalks.
