FDL High School Classes Cancelled Due To Threat
Classes at Fond du Lac High School are cancelled today due to a potential threat. Fond du Lac Police learned Monday afternoon that students had received information on snap chat about “an 11th and 12th grader having a gun” and that the school “might get shot up tomorrow.” Fond du Lac Schools Superintendent Jeffrey Fleig made the decision to cancel classes given the events that have occurred over the past two weeks and to give police additional time to conduct a thorough investigation.
Berlin School Threat
Berlin Police say they received information Sunday concerning threatening statements directed at the School District and another student. A juvenile from Berlin allegedly made the statements. The juvenile was identified and the matter was immediately investigated. Charges were referred to Green Lake County Social Services. Police say threatening statements are dangerous and are taken seriously. They say at this point no further threat to the community has been identified.
Attempted Murder Trial Postponed
The jury trial for an Oshkosh teen who allegedly tried to stab an Oshkosh West High School resource officer to death has been postponed. The attorney for 19-year-old Grant Fuhrman last week submitted a motion claiming his client couldn’t get a fair trial given the recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. A trial was scheduled to start today, but after last Thursday’s hearing it was removed from the court calendar. Fuhrman is charged with attempted first degree intentional homicide for the incident that occurred at Oshkosh West High School on December 3rd of 2019. Fuhrman allegedly attacked Officer Michael Wissink at Wissink’s office at the high school. Wissink fought back shooting and wounding Fuhrman, which stopped the attack. The judge agreed to the defense attorney’s motion and postponed the trial. A status hearing in the case is scheduled for June 7th.
Drunken Driving Arrests
The State Patrol arrested two Omro men in separate OWI arrests Saturday afternoon. Fifty-one-year-old Darin Garrison was involved in a motorcycle crash near the intersection of County Highway K and County Highway NN in Manitowoc County’s Town of Franklin. A 55-year-old woman was injured when she fell off the back of Garrison’s bike. He was arrested for his fourths operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated offense with an enhancer for causing injury. A preliminary breath test put his blood alcohol concentration at more than twice the legal limit (0.167).
Forty-eight-year-old Daniel Wittrock was arrested for his eighth OWI offense in Winnebago County. His pickup truck was reported to be driving all over the road on southbound Interstate 41. He finally pulled over on the exit ramp to Highway 45. Troopers suspected he was impaired due to substance use other than alcohol.
Green Lake County Administrator Leaving At The End Of The Year
The Green Lake County Board of Supervisors this month was supposed to evaluate the performance of County Administrator Catherine Schmit and set some goals, but instead they learned she will be leaving at the end of the year. County supervisor Luke Dretske says it came as a surprise but Schmit is of retirement age and recently lost her husband. He says after about a half dozen years with a County Administrator the board will need to replace her or look at another position for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the county such as a coordinator or county executive. He says it’s actually an opportunity for the county because there have been problems with communications between the county administrator and the county board.
COVID Vaccine For Those Five And Under
A former member of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force says he’s glad to see progress being made on a vaccine for those under the age of five. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says the Food and Drug Administration’s independent experts will review the data for both Moderna and Pfizer on June 15th. Kids would need three doses of Pfizer vaccine and two doses of the Moderna vaccine. If the data supports authorization, parents could start getting their kids vaccinated early this summer. He says unfortunately the vaccine has been available for 6 to 11-year-olds since November and less than a third have gotten the series of two shots. Children under age 5 are the only group in the U.S. that is not currently eligible for vaccination against COVID.
Click It Or Ticket Continues
The annual Click it or Ticket campaign entered its second week of enforcement on Memorial Day. It will wrap up after this Sunday. Law enforcement agencies across the state and neighboring states stepped up enforcement for drivers and passengers who are not wearing their seat belts. Among the popular misconceptions is that those who drive and ride in pickup trucks are better protected in a crash. Not so according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Nationally 58 percent of pickup truck occupants who were killed in 2019 were not buckled up compared to 43 percent of passenger car occupants. Too many people also wrongly believe they are safe in the back seat unrestrained. Nationally, 45 percent of all front seat passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2019 were unrestrained, but 58 percent of those killed in the back seat were not buckled up.
