A 36-year-old man wanted by authorities in Potter County, Texas is being extradited back to Texas after being captured in Fond du Lac County. Campbellsport Police Sergeant Terry Seely and Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Deputy Kieran Weed arrested Anthony Delacruz (pictured) in Campbellsport last Friday morning. Delacruz was taken into custody on the east end of Spring Street near the Milwaukee River. Delacruz has been wanted by officials in Texas since last July for injury to a child, elderly or disabled person and abandonment or endangerment of a child.

Smoking Materials Start Another FDL Fire

Fond du Lac firefighters got another call for a fire started by improperly discarded smoking materials Monday afternoon. They were dispatched just before 5:30 pm to 20 Forest Avenue, a building known as the Empire Building. Smoke and flames were coming from a window on the outside of the building. Occupants were evacuated while firefighters put out the fire and overhauled the front wall. Interim Fire Chief Erick Gerritson says over the past two weeks, Fond du Lac has experienced at least four confirmed fires as a result of improperly discarded smoking materials. He says it is imperative that smoking materials be fully extinguished and placed in an appropriate fire-proof receptacle.

During the Trooper’s investigation, the Trooper smelled the odor of intoxicants coming from Tanner Segor. After field sobriety testing he was arrested for his fourth OWI. Segor also submitted to a blood draw at an area hospital.

Aerial Traffic Enforcement Effort In FDL County Tomorrow

Wisconsin State Patrol photo

Better watch your speed this week as Wisconsin State Patrol officers monitor state highways from the sky. Weather permitting the Air Support Unit is scheduled to patrol for traffic violations. Interstate 41 in Fond du Lac County will be targeted Wednesday and US 53 in Douglas County on Friday.  Aerial enforcement is one way to enhance public safety efforts. From the air it’s much easier to spot drivers who are speeding or driving aggressively. When a pilot observes a violation, they communicate with ground-based units to initiate a traffic stop.

Lily Alert

State Representative Jesse James

Following the murder of 10-year-old Lily Peters in Chippewa Falls two Western Wisconsin state legislators are working on a way to better notify the public about missing children. Amber Alerts have certain criteria usually for children that have been abducted. Lily’s case didn’t meet it. State Representative Jesse James and State Representative Rob Summerfield represent that area. James is a former Altoona Police and Fire Chief and still works as a police officer in the village of Cadott. He says people from across the nation reached out about creating alerts for missing children like Lily. James says there will be a lot of stakeholders in the process of creating the legislation. He’s heard from a man in the Fox Valley involved in the development of the Amber Alert in 1991. Legislators from other states including a Minnesota State Senator have also reached out hoping to share what they came up with. James says being a father and grandfather what happened to Lily struck close to home for him as well.

Economic Development Goal

Berlin Alderman Luke Dretske says the city is going through some struggles in business and economic development. The Ripon College graduate and former State Assembly staffer says it will take a concerted effort to bring in new development to the city and people working toward the same goal. He says efforts like the farmers market help attract more people to the city. Although he is new to the Council and only 23 years old he says things seemed much busier in the downtown district even 10 years ago. Dretske won his term on the Berlin City Council and a spot on the Green Lake County Board of Supervisors during the spring election.

FDL County Health Department Loan Closet

Fond du Lac County’s Health Department has a loan closet with certain items a person might need while recuperating from an illness or surgery. County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says they have things like crutches and wheelchairs and commodes that they will loan out for six months at a time. She says they will check back with the person to see if they will need that item for longer than six months. They also take donations of items for the loan closet, but Mueller asks that people call ahead first so they can make room for that item in storage. The health department’s phone number is 920-929-3085.

A Lucky Day For Shredding

SSM Health Waupun Memorial Hospital is inviting the public to bring personal and confidential home office papers in need of safe and secure disposal to a free drive-thru shredding event “Don’t Sweat It, Shred It!” from noon to 2 pm on Friday, May 13th. Participants can enter the hospital on West Brown Street off Beaver Dam Street behind the new two-story patient care building before the Emergency Department. Watch for signs and a volunteer will help unload papers into the shredding truck on site. They will then proceed past the helicopter pad and onto Elm Avenue. The first 50 participants will receive a reusable tumbler.
