Josh Hader escaped a ninth-inning jam in his 37th straight scoreless appearance and the Milwaukee Brewers held off the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 Thursday night for their third straight win.
Tyrone Taylor drove in a run for the seventh game game in a row and Luis Urías homered as the NL Central leaders increased their edge over the second-place Cardinals to 4 1/2 games. Milwaukee first baseman Rowdy Tellez helped with his glove, ranging to catch five foul balls for outs. Overall, Brewers fielders caught seven foul outs.
Paul Goldschmidt homered and extended his hitting streak to 17 games for the Cardinals.
Hader, activated from the family medical emergency list earlier in the day, earned his 16th save in 16 tries this season. He gave up a leadoff single to Tommy Edman in the ninth and a one-out walk to Nolan Arenado before retiring Albert Pujols on a foul popup and Juan Yepez on a pop out. It marked Hader’s 30th consecutive save conversion. He hasn’t allowed a run since last July.
Eric Lauer (5-1) gave up two runs on four hits in the first two innings. His only blemish in his final three frames was a walk. He struck out one and walked four, throwing 96 pitches over five innings.
Urías hit his fourth homer of the season, connecting with one out in the first off Adam Wainwright (5-4). One out later, Andrew McCutchen hit the first of three consecutive singles by the Brewers and scored on Taylor’s hit. Christian Yelich drove in a run in the second and McCutchen had an RBI hit in the fourth.
Wainwright gave up 10 hits and four runs in five innings. He dropped a decision for the first time in four games.
Goldschmidt hit his eighth home run, a solo drive in the seventh off Trevor Gott that made it 4-3. He also singled and his hitting .457 with six homers during his streak. The Cardinals scored twice in the first. Edman doubled for the first of his three hits, Pujols had an RBI single and Yepez had a sacrifice fly.
Tonight Brewers: RHP Brandon Woodruff (5-2, 4.76) goes for his third consecutive win and his second against the Cardinals this year. He gave up three hits over five innings to get the win in a 5-1 win April 14 in Milwaukee. First pitch is at 7:15 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Thursday the Reds pounded the Cubs 20-5. Pittsburgh had the day off. Milwaukee increased its lead over St. Louis to 4 ½ games in the division.
In the NBA Western Conference Finals last night Golden State beat Dallas at home 120-110. The Warriors won the series 4-1 and will advance to the NBA Finals. Tonight in the Eastern Conference Finals Miami is at Boston with the Celtics leading 3-2.
The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders open their sixth season in the North Woods League on Memorial Day at home against the Wausau Woodchucks. First pitch is at 1:05.
In the Midwest League on Thursday Cedar Rapids beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 9-0. The T-Rats drop to 26-15 while Cedar Rapids improves to 28-14. The teams meet again tonight at Cedar Rapids.
The Midwest Conference (MWC) has revealed its All-Conference and major award winners for the 2022 baseball season. Ripon College received the Sportsmanship Award, reflecting the team’s outstanding representation of the MWC’s sportsmanship expectations; and three student-athletes were named to first-team, All-Conference.
Maintaining his form from last season, Ripon senior Nick Terrell was once again a first-team selection. Terrell, an exercise science major from Peoria, Illinois, started all 43 games for the Red Hawks, finishing conference play with a batting average of .343, a slugging percentage of .600, and an on-base percentage of .450 with 14 walks (six of those intentional). Terrell struck out only seven times and stole four bases on six attempts. The senior also drove in 24 runs, hit four home runs and was tied for the league lead with 14 doubles in MWC matchups. Terrell’s impressive season ranked him seventh overall among all MWC hitters.
After being the sole Red Hawk named first team All-Conference last season, Terrell was joined this year by teammates Samuel Ott and Mitchell Lukasik.
The team concluded the season third overall in the MWC with 13 wins and 11 losses.
The North Woods League and ESPN+ streaming partnership for the 2022 season kicks off with the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders Opening Day game on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30 at 1:05 p.m. against the Wausau Woodchucks.
The new streaming rights agreement will feature the first two Dock Spiders home games on May 30 against Wausau and June 2 against Green Bay.
“We are extremely excited for this partnership with ESPN+,” said Dock Spiders General Manager Jim Misudek. “The ability to bring the atmosphere of Dock Spiders baseball to a larger audience will allow us to highlight the very best of Fond du Lac while showcasing the talent of the Northwoods League. Kicking off this league-wide partnership with a Dock Spiders home game is a tremendous honor that will showcase the best of our organization both on the field and behind the scenes.”
Each Dock Spiders broadcast features four HD cameras around Herr-Baker Field, and will feature a pregame show prior to first pitch hosted by play-by-play broadcaster Javik Blake. Along with select games on ESPN+ throughout the season, the 2022 Northwoods League All-Star Game, Major League Dreams Showcase and the Northwoods League Playoffs will all air on ESPN+.
All home games throughout the 2022 season are available on the Northwoods League Baseball Network. Future Dock Spiders games on the ESPN+ platform during the 2022 season will be announced at a later date.
