Sports for Thursday

Giannis Antetokounmpo was having his best shooting night of the playoffs. Milwaukee dominated on the boards. And still the Bucks trailed Boston by 14 points in a game that could send the defending NBA champions to the brink of elimination.

That’s when Jrue Holiday showed the Defensive Player of the Year a thing or two about defense.

Bobby Portis put back Antetokounmpo’s missed free throw with 15 seconds left, and Holiday snuffed Marcus Smart on Boston’s final two possessions Wednesday night as Milwaukee erased a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Celtics 110-107 and take a 3-2 series lead.  Game six is Friday night In Milwaukee.

Antetokounmpo had 40 points and 11 rebounds, making 16 of 27 shots — including a long 3-pointer to make it 105-102 with 1:40 to play. Holiday finished with 24 points, eight rebounds and eight assists and Portis added 14 points and 15 rebounds. The Bucks can advance to the Eastern Conference finals with a victory in Game 6 at home Friday night.

Jayson Tatum scored 34 points and Jaylen Brown had 26 for the Celtics, who need a win in Milwaukee to force a decisive seventh game back in Boston on Sunday.

The Celtics led 93-79 early in the fourth before the Bucks closed the gap, tying it at 105 with 43 seconds to play on back-to-back 3-pointers from Antetokounmpo and Holiday. Tatum hit a pair of free throws to give Boston back the lead.

Antetokounmpo went to the the line with a chance to tie it and made the first, then Portis grabbed the rebound of the second and put it in off the backboard to give Milwaukee its first lead since early in the second quarter.

Smart drove to the basket but Holiday blocked him and came away with the ball, throwing it off the Celtics guard while falling out of bounds.

Pat Connaughton made a pair of free throws with six seconds left, then Holiday stole the ball from Smart on his desperation dash for a potential game-tying 3-pointer. The Celtics committed eight of their 10 turnovers in the second half and gave up a 49-36 rebounding edge in all.

Milwaukee had 17 offensive rebounds to Boston’s five, with Portis grabbing seven.

In the Western Conference semifinals Wednesday night Memphis won at home over Golden State 134-95.  The Warriors still lead in the series 3-2.

Tonight Miami plays at Philadelphia with the Heat up 3-2 and Phoenix is at Dallas with the Suns up 3-2.

Christian Yelich hit for a record-tying third cycle — amazingly, all of them against Cincinnati, but it wasn’t enough as the Brewers comeback in the ninth inning fells short Wednesday in a 14-11 loss to the Reds.

Yelich tripled during a six-run ninth inning rally. His teammates were well aware of the significance, and they stood on the top row of the dugout to applaud him.  Yelich became the sixth player in major league history to hit at least one home run, triple, double and single in the same game three times. He joined Trea Turner, Adrián Beltré, Babe Herman, Bob Meusel and John Reilly in accomplishing the feat. Earlier, Yelich doubled in the first, hit a three-run homer in the third and singled in the fifth.  Late in the 2018 season, Yelich hit for the cycle twice in a span of three weeks against the Reds.

Tyler Stephenson drove in four runs with a pair of doubles and Colin Moran hit a three-run homer for Cincinnati. The Reds, with the worst record in the majors, won their second straight series by topping the NL Central leaders.  Tyler Naquin hit a bases-loaded triple for Cincinnati, which led 7-0 after two innings. Moran homered during a six-run eighth that made it 14-5.

Reds starter Vladimir Gutiérrez allowed four runs and six hits over 4 2/3 innings. The right-hander exited with a four-run lead and the bases loaded in the fifth, and Alexis Diaz (1-0) came in and struck out Luis Urías.

Adrian Houser (3-3) made it through four innings. He gave up six hits and seven runs, four of them unearned because of two infield errors. Reliever J.C. Mejia was charged with five runs in the Reds’ eighth-inning outburst.

The Reds scored four in the first on Stephenson’s RBI double and Naquin’s bases-loaded triple off the center-field wall that came about a foot short of being a grand slam.  The Reds loaded the bases again in the second. After Houser fanned Mike Moustakas for the second out, Stephenson struck again, driving in all three in with a double to left. Tommy Pham drove in two more runs for the Reds in the eighth with a bases-loaded single, followed by an RBI single by Moustakas to cushion the lead.

The Brewers are off today before opening a  weekend series with Miami.  RHP Corbin Burnes (1-2, 1.86) is scheduled to get the start against RHP Pablo López (4-1, 1.00 ERA).

Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Pirates beat the Dodgers 5-3, the Cubs downed the Padres 7-5 and the Cardinals pounded the Orioles 10-1. Milwaukee leads St. Louis by two games in the division.

The Green Bay Packers will host the Dallas Cowboys at Lambeau Field this season. The NFL announced Wednesday that the iconic franchises will meet in Week 10 for a 3:25 p.m. kickoff. The date is Sunday, Nov. 13th . It will mark former Packers Coach Mike McCarthy’s first trip to Lambeau Field as head coach of the Cowboys.

The Packers have won the last three matchups with the Cowboys. The Cowboys last defeated the Packers in an October 2016 game at Lambeau. That’s the last time the Cowboys came to Titletown.  The full NFL schedule will be released Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m.
