FDL Domestic Incident And Chase

A 21-year-old Fond du Lac man is facing multiple charges for domestic violence and a vehicle chase that ensued when police officers responded to the incident at an apartment complex in the 100 block of South National Avenue Wednesday morning. A 9-1-1 call asked for assistance at the apartment building for what was believed to be a domestic abuse incident in which the suspect was armed with a handgun. The suspect ended up leading police on a vehicle chase reaching speeds up to 65 miles per hour on city streets. He and a 16-year-old Fond du Lac resident were eventually detained. The teen was turned over to family while the suspect was booked into the Fond du Lac County jail on multiple charges including strangulation and suffocation and battery. Police responded to the incident at 6:08 Wednesday morning.

Vehicle Entries In FDL

Police in Fond du Lac are urging residents to lock their doors and windows on unattended vehicles. They also say it is important to remove valuables. They say over a two-day period, Monday and Tuesday, 15 to 20 vehicles were entered. Crimes included theft from a motor vehicle and criminal damage to property. Fond du Lac Police Chief Aaron Goldstein says the increase in crime is uncharacteristic of the community. The thefts occurred on the west side of the city near the Sabish Middle School and the east side near St. Agnes Hospital. Anyone with information is urged to call Detective Nick Hahn at (920) 322-3721 or the Crime Alert line at (920) 322-3740.

Fond du Lac firefighters responded to a marsh fire on Lakeshore Drive just north of Howard Litscher Drive late Tuesday night. Interim Fire Chief Erick Gerritson says about 20 acres of marsh grass burned. The department used its Brush Response ATV because of the remote location of the fire. The blaze was extinguished in approximately 45 minutes. The Van Dyne Fire Department assisted on the scene with water supply needs. Gerritson says very dry weather and strong winds have created an extreme fire risk for grass and marsh fires. The cause of the fire is being determined.

AirBNB Question Answered

The City of Ripon is working on a draft ordinance to better regulate conditional use permits for AirBNBs, Rent By Owners and other short term tourist housing rentals. Alderman John Splitt brought the subject up during the Common Council meeting Tuesday night.  City Administrator Adam Sonntag said currently the city is using the same standard they have been using for Bed and Breakfasts which isn’t really appropriate. He says it is also hard to track those rentals for room tax purposes. He says properties rented out for the week of E-A-A would also need a conditional use permit under the ordinance that is being drafted.

Aaron Sadoff

After 13 years as Superintendent of the North Fond du Lac School District, Aaron Sadoff will have a new job next January.  Starting January 1st he will take over as executive director of the Fond du Lac Area Foundation.  Joe Braun resigned as the Foundation’s executive director at the end of April. He says he’s grateful for the opportunity he had in North Fond du Lac, but is also looking forward to what he can do with the Foundation. Waupun Fire Department Chief B.J. DeMaa says a startup grant of $4,000 from SSM Health Greater Fond du Lac Region helped them pay for the equipment needed to get their Emergency Medical Responder services off the ground. The EMR services have been offered in the City of Waupun since this past February providing initial patient care until an ambulance arrives or assisting paramedics at the scene.  The City of Waupun is the hub of the Waupun Ambulance District within Fond du Lac County. The service territory of that District covers the City of Waupun, Towns of Alto, Metomen, Oakfield, Springvale, and Waupun, and the Villages of Brandon and Oakfield. The Dodge County Township of Chester and northeast portion of the Town of Trenton also fall within the District. In the last year, the District has experienced an 18 percent increase in 9-1-1 ambulance calls.

COVID Takes A Back Seat

The latest surge of COVID-19 cases has taken a back seat to other stories in the news. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker formerly of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force says a shortage in infant formula, the invasion of the Ukraine, and other stories have supplanted the coronavirus as what Americans want to hear about but we should still remain vigilant about COVID.  He points out that Billionaire Bill Gates saw the pandemic coming writing about the possibility of an airborne virus in an article in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2015 but we didn’t heed the warning. Gates did a follow-up his latest book is entitled “How to Prevent the Next Pandemic” which is mostly about testing and fast response. Gates has tested positive for COVID but on Twitter said he’s experiencing only minor symptoms because he had the vaccine and boosters. He’s also isolating himself.

Trump Chances

Congressman Glenn Grothman says although Donald Trump seems to be gaining traction for another run at President he doesn’t believe Republicans would support the former President’s candidacy. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah says Trump did a lot of good things when he was President, but social media and particularly Twitter were his undoing. He believes Republicans would rather see Florida Governor Ron DeSantis get the GOP’s nod.  Grothman says he’s hoping Trump will respect the primary election process if he does run for another term.

Ghosting Job Interviews

State Representative Alex Dallman says there were a few bills Governor Tony Evers vetoed Republican were hoping to push through including one he authored to help out employers. He says it is tough enough for employers to find employees without someone “ghosting” them when it comes to showing up for a job interview. The state lawmaker from Green Lake says the bill would have created a way for those employers to report to the Department of Workforce Development when someone “ghosted” them on an interview. That jobseeker then would have been removed from receiving unemployment benefits.

Mega Mistake

A number of Mega Millions players across the country who watched the live drawing on television Tuesday night maybe steaming. For the record no one won the big jackpot which was at $86 million and will climb to $99 million for tomorrow night’s drawing. The first five numbers drawn were correct Tuesday evening, but when the Megaball was drawn the announcer read it as a “6” instead of a “9” which it really was. A close up of the ball used for the Megaball showed the number was underlined so there would not be a mistake. Lottery officials say it wouldn’t have changed the outcome for the overall jackpot, but some players may have thought they won other cash prizes which they won’t be able to collect on. The numbers for Tuesday night’s drawing were 15, 19, 20, 61, 70 and the Megaball was “9.”
