Sports for Wednesday

Josh Hader reached 500 career strikeouts, Luis Urías hit a tying home run and made a clutch catch and the Milwaukee Brewers held off Cincinnati 5-4 Tuesday night to stop the Reds’ season-high, two-game winning streak.

Jace Peterson broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth with the first of his two doubles for the NL Central-leading Brewers, who ended a three-game losing streak. With the potential tying run on third base with two outs in the eighth, Urías dived to his left at shortstop to snare Kyle Farmer’s liner just above the ground and end a three-run rally.

Hader worked around a leadoff walk in a hitless ninth and became only the third pitcher with saves in his first 12 appearances of a season after Lee Smith in 1994 and José Mesa in 2005.  Hader struck out Brandon Drury and Tommy Pham for the final two outs and reached 500 strikeouts. Hader accomplished the feat in 293 2/3 innings, the second-fastest behind Aroldis Chapman 292 innings.

Willy Peralta (2-1) allowed one run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings with a season-high eight strikeouts and one walk.

Cincinnati, a major league-worst 6-24, was trying to come from behind to win for its third straight game after not having accomplished the feat in its first 27 games.

Hunter Greene (1-5) lost his fifth straight start since winning his major league debut at Atlanta on April 10. He allowed two runs, four hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings, six days after giving up a team-record-tying five home runs in a 10-5 loss at Milwaukee.

Cincinnati is the first team since 1893 in which no starter has gotten through six innings in its first 30 games.

Tyler Stephenson’s RBI double put the Reds in the second, and Urías homered in the fourth After Peterson’s go-ahead double, Kolten Wong added a sacrifice fly.

Victor Caratini and Willy Adames had RBI singles in the eighth off Hunter Strickland, boosting the lead to 5-1.

Devin Williams walked three in the bottom half, including Colin Moran with the bases loaded, and Tyler Naquin hit a two-run double.

Milwaukee RHP Adrian Houser (3-2, 3.42) is scheduled to make his second straight start against the Reds in Wednesday’s series finale. Houser gave up seven hits and five runs in five innings of a 10-5 last Thursday. He is due to be opposed by RHP Vladimir Gutiérrezz (0-5, 8.86), who was rocked for eight hits and seven runs in Cincinnati’s 18-4 loss at Milwaukee on May 4. First pitch is at 11:35 CDT and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS,

Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Dodgers pounded the Pirates 11-1, the Orioles beat the Cardinals 5-3 and the Padres nipped the Cubs 5-4. The Brewers increased their lead over the Cardinals to three games in the division.

Angels’ rookie lefthander Reid Detmers threw a no-hitter in just his 11th career start Tuesday night as the Angels pounded the Tampa Bay Rays, 12-0.  Detmers, though, showed why he was so highly regarded, entering the year as MLB.com’s No. 1 left-handed pitching prospect in baseball, limited Tampa Bay to one walk and an error to complete the no-hitter despite striking out just two batters.  Detmers entered the game with a 6.33 ERA.

The Bucks are at Boston tonight in game five of their Eastern Conference Semifinal series.  Milwaukee lost game four at home 116-108 Monday night as the Celtics evened the series at two games each.  Boston was led by Al Horford and Jayson Tatum who scored 30 points apiece as the Celtics staged a fourth quarter comeback for the win.  Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 34 points.  Tipoff is at 6:00 CDT.

In the Western Conference semifinals tonight Golden State is at Memphis.  The Warriors, leading 3-1, will try and wrap up their series to advance to the Conference Finals.

Last night in the Eastern Conference semifinals, Miami won at home over Philadelphia 120-85 to up 3-2 in that series.  In the Western Conference, Phoenix won at home over Dallas 110-80 and lead in that series 3-2.

Hall of Fame center Bob Lanier passed away Tuesday night.  The former No. 1 pick,  averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds per game for the Bucks and Pistons throughout his 14-season career.  Bob Lanier was 73.
