Car Goes Into Silver Creek
A 23-year-old Ripon man taking a used car for a test drive late Saturday morning put it into Silver Creek. According to the accident report Jamie Melville, Jr. told Ripon Police he was driving down hill on South Pearl Street and the brakes weren’t working. He turned right on Kellogg Street and couldn’t slow down. He couldn’t stop the vehicle when he got to the end of the road and steered to avoid hitting a house at 533 Kellogg Street. The car continued across a lawn toward the creek, trees and an embankment. Melville jumped from the moving vehicle. The car hit the embankment wall went over it and ended up in the creek. Police were unable to determine if the brakes on the vehicle were working. Melville wasn’t injured in the crash.
Portage Man Involved In Domestic Violence And Vehicle Pursuit
A 31-year-old Portage man is facing multiple charges for domestic violence and a subsequent chase Saturday night in Columbia County. Sheriff’s officials say Marcus Williams was allegedly involved in a domestic violence incident in the Town of Lewiston but fled the residence in a vehicle which a deputy spotted on Highway 127. A pursuit ensued which concluded when the suspect’s vehicle crashed at the Cascade Mountain Resort exit. Williams fled on foot but was captured a short time later. Charges referred against Williams include domestic disorderly conduct, domestic battery, fleeing an officer, vehicle theft, resisting an officer, operating with a restricted controlled substance, and marijuana possession. He is being held in the Columbia County Jail.
FDL Porch Fire
For the fifth time in the past few weeks Fond du Lac firefighters responded to a fire that resulted from improperly discarded smoking materials. It happened Mother’s Day morning at a residence on West Scott Street. The fire was located on a porch and residents were trying to extinguish it when firefighters arrived. Fire Department officials say if not for a passing motorist noticing the fire it could have been more serious. The fire at 363 West Scott Street was reported just before 10:30 Sunday morning. Interim Fire Chief Erick Gerritsen stresses smoking materials should be discarded into a fire-proof receptacle.
Report Suspicious Activity
Green Lake County Chief Deputy Sheriff Matt Vande Kolk urges residents to report any suspicious activity they see and at a minimum note times, locations and descriptions. He says although they are busy, they are never too busy to check out reports of suspicious activity which could lead to a real crime that is in progress or has happened. He asks that residents have patience and understanding because they can’t be everywhere at once. He says they are working hard to make the community safe and catch crooks. Vande Kolk’s comments come in the wake of reports of several attempted break-ins.
Ripon Common Council Preview
The Ripon Common Council tonight is expected to approve a low bid of just over $441,000 from Kartechner Brothers of Waupun for the reconditioning of several city streets. Only two bids were received for the work on portions of South Douglas, West Thorne, Woodside and Watertown. The city is working on a cost sharing agreement with the Town of Ripon to complete the remainder of South Douglas Street. The Council will also consider repealing five ordinances that are out-of-date that have to do with positions, boards and committees that are no longer used. The Council meets at 7 pm in the Council Chambers of the Ripon City Hall.
BBB Scholarships Awarded
The Better Business Bureau has awarded 15 Wisconsin high school seniors each a $2,500 scholarship as part of its annual BBB Students of Integrity Scholarship program. Among the winners are; Ella Borgwardt who attends Winnebago Lutheran Academy in Fond du Lac who will be attending Wisconsin Lutheran College, and Hayley Moore who attends Wautoma High School and will be going to the UW-La Crosse. Recipients of the scholarship program are chosen primarily based on their personal essay submissions and letters of reference. Scholarship recipients are chosen by an independent judging panel made up of college admissions counselors, university staff, community leaders and a past scholarship recipient.
