Sports for April 7th
The Brewers open the regular season on the road this afternoon at Wrigley Field against the Cubs. Right-hander Corbin Burnes goes against fellow righty Kyle Hendricks. Burnes won the National League Cy Young Award last season while going 11-5 with a league-leading 2.43 ERA. Hendricks went 14-7 last year with a 4.77 ERA. First pitch is at 1:20 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
The Bucks are back in action tonight, hosting the Boston Celtics. Milwaukee (49-30) trails Boston by a half-game for second place in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics (50-30) are two games behind first-place Miami (52-28) while the Bucks trail the Heat by 2 ½ games. Milwaukee is coming off a 127-106 victory over the Bulls in Chicago Tuesday night.
The Milwaukee Bucks have added some backcourt depth by signing Luca Vildoza. Vildoza is a 26-year-old guard from Argentina. He played two NBA Las Vegas Summer League games last year with the New York Knicks. The Knicks waived him in early October. The 6-foot-3 Vildoza was named the Spanish ACB League Finals MVP in 2020 after helping Baskonia win the league title. He played for Baskonia from 2017-21. He averaged 10.6 points, 3.5 assists, 1.9 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 24.5 minutes in 62 games across EuroLeague and Spanish ACB competition in the 2020-21 season.
Meanwhile, fans can get their chance to be in the arena when the Milwaukee Bucks begin their NBA championship defense. The Central Division champions are making a limited number of single-game tickets on sale for the first playoff series. The full playoff schedule has not been released, but the postseason begins next week. Tickets go on sale at noon Friday on the Bucks’ website.
The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired Victor Caratini from the San Diego Padres to address their catching depth as Pedro Severino serves an 80-game suspension to begin the season. Milwaukee sent minor-league outfielder Korry Howell and catcher Brett Sullivan to the Padres in the Wednesday trade that brought Caratini to the Brewers. This trade comes one day before the Brewers open the season on the road against the Chicago Cubs and one day after Severino received his 80-day suspension. They made another trade on Wednesday as well, as they got catcher Alex Jackson from the Miami Marlins in exchange for minor leaguer infielder Hayden Cantrelle and pitcher Alexis Ramirez. The Brewers assigned Jackson to triple-A Nashville.
Outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus says he’s retiring, ending a 10-year career in which he made 58 sacks. The 31-year-old Mercilus announced his decision Wednesday via Instagram. The 2012 first-round draft pick from Illinois spent nearly his entire career with the Houston Texans before playing four regular-season games and one playoff contest with the Green Bay Packers last season. Mercilus had all but one of his 58 career sacks with the Texans. He had a career-high 12 sacks in 2015.
The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and their fans celebrated Fan Fest Wednesday at Fox Cities Stadium. The T-Rats open their season at home this Friday night against the Peoria Chiefs to start a three-game weekend series. First pitch is set for 6:45.
The Masters begins this morning at August National Golf Course with much of the hype centered around the return of Tiger Woods. Woods, a five-time Masters champion, has not played in a tournament since a car crash early last year in Los Angeles severely injured his right leg.
