Griffith Wins FDL County Board Race
For the first time in 28 years someone other than Marty Farrell will be representing District 1 on the Fond du Lac County Board of Supervisors. Kat Griffith (pictured) won the seat Tuesday receiving 429 votes to Timothy Bachleitner’s 348. Griffith says she is really pleased and is looking forward to representing the district. She says she realizes she’s got some big shoes to fill but is looking forward to the challenge. Elsewhere incumbent Karen Madigan easily defeated challenger James Will in District 3 getting 735 votes to Will’s 260. Common Council Races
Ripon Common Council Alderman Howard Hansen Tuesday won a fourth term representing District 4. Hansen got 118 votes to challenger Annette Klein’s 93 votes. Hansen who serves on the Parks and Recreation Committee and the Ripon Area Fire District Board says he’s looking forward to continuing his role on both. Former Alderman Doug Iverson was reelected to the Common Council in District 3. He received 152 votes to Mike Boscaljon’s 131. Ripon Mayor Ted Grant was reelected getting 837 votes. There were 230 votes for write-in. Ripon College student Andrew Dowling was a registered write-in candidate. In the Oshkosh Common Council race winners were Matt Mugerauer, Lynnsey Erickson, and Michael Ford. Robert Wilcox finished out of the running.
Other Races
In the race for Court of Appeals Judge District 2 Maria Lazar got 158,290 votes to incumbent Judge Lori Kornblum’s 131,863 votes. In a couple of Village Board races for the Village of Rosedale Trustee race Keegan Madigan (220 votes), Tammy Pflum (206) and Jeremy Giebel (203) won seats on the board. Julie Stigler (168 votes) finished out of the running. The Village of Oakfield Board had seats available for 3 trustees. Winning those seat were Christopher Cooke (233 votes), Jim Eckberg (205) and Al Kaminski (167). Timothy Wiese (148 votes) and W. Stephen Boone (85) didn’t receive enough votes.
School Board Races
Yesterday’s voting settled contested seats for school board races in the area. For the Rosendale-Brandon School Board Jennifer Riedemann won the right to represent Brandon on the board getting 1117 votes to Desiree Rickert Frank’s 521.Two seats were up for election in the Waupun School District. Lori Van Buren will represent the City of Waupun defeating Benjamin Pickart (1489 votes to 482). Megan Vande Zande will represent the Town of Alto and Trenton after besting Jodi Tank (1138/920 votes). In the Berlin School Board race Nick Bartol (854 votes), Mike Shattuck (797), Sara Podoll (711) and Catrina Burgess (605) won seatS on the board. Allison Davey (576) finished out of the running. In the Oshkosh School Board race winners were Liz Szilagy (5526 votes) and Stephanie Carlin (5294). Kelly Dewitt (5,233) and Sara Dougherty Noe (5,214) finished out of the running.
School District Referendums
School District Referendums in Rosendale-Brandon and Oakfield had mixed success with voters Tuesday. Voters in Rosendale-Brandon were asked to approve $29.7 million for school improvements and upgrades, but voted it down with 959 voting no and 773 in favor of it. Meanwhile in Oakfield the opposite was true with 449 voters voting in favor of borrowing up to $16 million for facility improvements and 396 voting against. A referendum in the School District of Markesan was approved by voters with 764 voting in favor of exceeding state revenue caps by $950,000 a year for four years and 427 voting against. A school referendum in the Princeton School District passed with 360 votes in favor and 222 votes against exceeding the state revenue cap by $625,000 a year for five years. Voters in the Winneconne Community School District voted down a request to spend nearly $48 million for renovations and improvements with 1863 voting against and 1351 in favor.
Congressman Grothman Critical Of Release Of Oil Reserves
Congressman Glenn Grothman feels it was a mistake for President Biden to release a million barrels of oil a day for six months to help bring down gasoline prices. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah says it will only bring down prices temporarily and the reserves are meant to be on hand for a real emergency. He says other presidents have also done it, but it is usually connected with political gain. It’s estimated the United States uses 25 to 30 million gallons of oil a day. The price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Wisconsin fell by 9 cents in the past week according to the Wisconsin AAA.
Session Over What Is Next
State Senator Joan Ballweg says although the legislative session ended a couple of weeks ago she will remain busy throughout the rest of the year. The state lawmaker from Markesan says they continue constituent services and she attends functions to talk with people about their concerns. She says she also hopes to get on a study committee or task force over the summer, which will lead to legislation down the line. Her service on a suicide prevention task force led to a number of pieces of legislation. Ballweg says they also will continue to fine tune proposals for legislation that they weren’t able to put forth during the last session.
COVID 19 Report
Wisconsin’s COVID-19 cases increased again on Tuesday with the 7-day rolling average for new cases increasing to 401 the first time it has been over that number in nearly 4 weeks. The 7-day rolling average for deaths also increased to 5 up from 3 the day before. The positivity rate was also up slightly to 3.5 percent. The Wisconsin Hospital Association reported 157 COVID-19 patients in hospitals across the state with 26 in intensive care units.
Winnebago County recorded 16 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday. Ten new cases were reported in Fond du Lac County.
FDL Water Utility Scam
The City of Fond du Lac Water Utility is warning residents about a scammer calling utility customers posing as a city employee and informing them they have a delinquent water balance and may ask for payment over the phone. Utility officials say they do not solicit payments over the phone and would never call customers to inform them of a delinquent balance. If an account becomes delinquent a notification would be mailed to the billing address on file with the Utility. Those who have any questions or concerns can call the Fond du Lac Water Utility Office at 920-322-3680.
Oshkosh Middle School Groundbreaking
The Oshkosh Area School District will hold a groundbreaking ceremony this morning for the new Vel Phillips Middle School. The 11 am event will feature stakeholders and representatives from the new school community and will be attended by District and school leadership. The event will also be live streamed on YouTube. The site of the new school is south of Nevada Avenue between Jackson Street and Kentucky Street. Those attending the groundbreaking can enter the site off Kentucky Street. The entrance is across the street from the current Merrill Elementary/Middle School. Street parking is available. A rain date is scheduled for Thursday at 11 am of needed.
