Sports for Friday

The Packers selected inside linebacker Quay Walker from Georgia with the 22nd pick in the NFL Draft.  After plenty of speculation, especially after the trade that sent Davante Adams to Las Vegas, Brian Gutekunst and company elected to add to their defense with the first of their two picks.

Walker is 6′4″ 241 pound inside linebacker, and ran a 4.5 40 yard dash at the combine.  Last season Walker racked up 67 tackles, 5.5 for loss with 1.5 sacks, and three pass breakups for the Bulldogs last season. He was a first time starter as a senior, and now gets to learn from De’Vondre Campbell. The Packers brought back the All-Pro linebacker in free agency this offseason.

Walker saw his playing time increase each year, and spent time as a starter in each of his last two seasons with the Bulldogs. In 2018, Walker made big contributions for the Bulldogs on special teams and was named Georgia’s Special Teams Newcomer of the Year as a freshman.

The Packers double dipped on defense in the first round of the NFL Draft, picking Georgia defensive tackle Devote Wyatt at number 28.

The 6′3″ 304 pound All-SEC selection helped lead Georgia to a National Championship in 2021 with 39 tackles, seven for loss with 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles in 14 starts.

Green Bay also became the first team in the Common Draft Era to pick two defensive players from the same school in the same draft. That’s with Wyatt paired alongside linebacker Quay Walker with the 22nd selection in the first round.

General Manager Brian Gutekunst has now picked three straight Georgia Bulldogs in the first round. Last year Green Bay selected cornerback Eric Stokes, who went on to be a big contributor filling in at times for Kevin King.

The second round of the NFL draft continues today and the Packers will have the 53rd and 59th picks overall.  Green Bay had aa picks going into the draft which wraps up on Saturday.

With the first pick in the draft the Jacksonville Jaguars chose defensive end Travon Walker.  With the second pick the lions took defensive end Aiden Hutchinson, the Texans picked cornerback Derek Stingely, the Jets choses cornerback Ahmad Gardner with the fourth pick. The Giants took defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux to round out the top five.

Former Pirate star Andrew McCutchen led off the game with his 93rd home run in Pittsburgh — and first without the familiar ‘P’ on his cap — and added a go-ahead two-run single in the ninth as Milwaukee won its eighth straight over the Pirates, 3-2 Thursday afternoon,  datingback  to last season.  The 2013 National League MVP, who came in hitting just .136 in 17 career games against Pittsburgh.

He said afterwards, “It was a good game to show up. A good day to sleep in my own bed and to be able to get that ‘W.’”

Christian Yelich started the Brewers’ rally with a one-out, pinch-hit bunt single against closer Chris Stratton (0-1). Kolten Wong and Omar Narvaez followed with singles to load the bases for McCutchen. The 35-year-old’s liner seemed to graze the outstretched glove of second baseman Josh VanMeter before rolling into right field, allowing Yelich and Wong to score.

Hoby Milner (2-0) worked a perfect eighth to pick up the win. Devin Williams retired the Pirates in order in the ninth for his first save.

The Brewers are home tonight for a weekend series against the Chicago Cubs. Adrian Houser (1-2, 3.52 ERA) starts on Friday against Kyle Hendricks (1-1, 3.98). First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Thursday the Braves beat the Cubs 5-1 and the Cardinals knocked off the Diamondbacks 8-3.  Milwaukee leads St. Louis by a game in the division while the Cubs and Pirates are 4 ½ behind and the Reds are 9 ½ out.

The Milwaukee Bucks open their semifinal round of the Eastern Conference playoffs at Boston Sunday.   The Celtics swept their series 4-0 against Brooklyn while the Bucks won their series in five games over the Chicago Bulls.  The winner of the series advances on to the NBA Eastern Conference Finals.
