No Mow May In Ripon

Ripon residents are encouraged to BEE friendly and participate in the No Mow May program next month. A number of cities in Wisconsin have adopted the pollinator friendly program. In Ripon the Common Council approved a resolution to give it a try. Ripon Police Chief Bill Wallner says it is important that participants register on the city website so they can track the success of the program and who is participating in it. He says his officers will educate people about the program who are not participating in it but simply are refraining from cutting their lawns. Wallner says it may not be practical for some to go the whole month without cutting the grass. He also urges those with excess lawn clippings after the program is over to properly dispose of them at the city’s composite site which is open Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Polling Change In Ripon For Special Election

Voters in Ripon’s 3rd and 4th Aldermanic Districts will be voting at the Ripon City Hall during the special election for Fond du Lac County Executive on June 7th, but not on the lower level where they customarily vote. The Ripon Common Council approved the so-called move this week which will have them join voters for the 1st and 2nd Aldermanic District in the Council Chambers of City Hall to cast their ballots. Consequently the move will result in what is considered a single voting unit and single polling location for the single ballot. Alderwoman Ellen Sorensen, a member of the League of Voters of the Ripon Area, made the motion to approve the temporary change. City Administrator Adam Sonntag told the Council there will be signs posted at City Hall that day to notify voters of the change in locations.

Ballweg Listening Sessions

State Senator Joan Ballweg has scheduled her spring listening sessions which will be held across the 14th State Senate District next month. Goodbye Alice

Alice in Dairyland Julia Nunes

For Alice in Dairyland Julia Nunes passing the torch to the next Alice in Dairyland in Dane County next month will be bittersweet. The six finalists will compete in the finals May 19th through the 21st with the new Alice crowned on Saturday, May 21st. Nunes has held the crown for two years because of COVID-19 and she says it will be tough for her to write a final speech. On the other hand she is looking forward to that weekend because the epidemic robbed her of the traditional pomp and circumstance that goes with crowning a new Alice two years ago. Normally the Alice reigns until the following June but again thanks to the health crisis Nunes will reign through the 4th of July which gives her one more June Dairy Month to promote Wisconsin Agriculture at Dairy breakfasts and brunches.
