Fatal Golf Cart Accident
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Department responded to a fatal accident involving a golf cart Saturday night in Saddle Ridge in the Town of Pacific. Alcohol was a factor in the mishap. A 53-year-old man was operating the cart on a paved roadway when a 51-year-old woman in the cart fell out and hit the back of her head. A neighbor heard a loud noise and called 911 after seeing the injured woman. Bystanders and the golf cart operator assisted with medical care until law enforcement arrived. The injured woman was flown to the UW Hospital in Madison where she died of her injuries. The golf cart driver was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Additional charges may be forthcoming after the investigation is complete and has been reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office.
No Mow May In Ripon
Ripon Monday night joined a number of growing communities in Wisconsin that will be participating in the No Mow May movement. The Common Council unanimously approved a resolution designating next month as No Mow May encouraging residents to practice the bee and other pollinator friendly practice of refraining from mowing their lawns. Ripon Alderman David Gallups joked, “I personally am going to enjoy not mowing my yard.” But some will have to mow their yards depending on how fast their lawn grows. City Administrator Adam Sonntag says the city will be setting up a website that will allow those who want to participate to register their address. He says that will allow the city to track how successful the effort is but also enforce the city’s nuisance ordinance for those who simply choose not to mow their lawns.

Financial Literacy Month
A bill authored by State Senator Joan Ballweg and State Representative Alex Dallman would have required some financial literacy as a high school graduation requirement. It didn’t make it into law, but Ballweg says its goal of preparing students for life and doing financial planning is still worthwhile. The state lawmaker from Markesan says financial literacy is something we will use throughout our lives. She says a little financial education could help people avoid credit card and student debt so we can afford a home. She notes differences in financial knowledge can account for 30 to 40 percent of inequality related to retirement wealth, and numerous studies show it can lead to a happier, healthier and more prosperous life. April is Financial Literacy Month.

Food Sustainability
Alice in Dairyland Julia Nunes says farmers work hard to produce things we can use at our tables so the least we can do is practice food sustainability at home. She says it’s not that difficult to do. For instance proper storage will reduce food waste. She says hard cheeses can be wrapped in parchment or cheese paper which you can read about on her blog. She also recommends freezing beef or preparing and freezing it for things you will make later like tacos. She says it seems against some people’s nature to make the most of leftovers, but those too can be repurposed. She likes to use some leftovers in egg bakes. She says in addition to her Alice in Dairyland blog good places for recipes are BeefTips.com and WisconsinCheese.com.
The Great American Trailer Park Musical
A visiting professor from Ohio State University is directing the musical comedy that will be performed at Ripon College this week. Lillian Brown is the Faculty Fellow Visiting Professor of Theatre for Ripon College. Brown says “The Great American Trailer Park Musical” is about a stripper on the run who takes refuge from her crazy ex-boyfriend in a trailer park in Florida where she has an affair with a married tenant. She says it has a touch of “Jerry Springer” in it but has been a lot of fun to direct with comedy, drama and of course singing. The musical will be performed by a talented cast of Ripon College students this Wednesday through Saturday at the Benstead Theatre in the C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts at 7:30 pm. The doors open at 7 pm each evening. Admission is free but reservations are recommended by calling 920-748-8741 or email boxoffice@ripon.edu
