Sports for Monday
Eric Lauer struck out a career-high 13 over six innings, Christian Yelich hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth and the Brewers beat Philadelphia 1-0 on Sunday night. Lauer and Aaron Nola took no-decisions in a pitchers’ duel that saw the starters combine for 22 strikeouts. Nola allowed one hit and struck out nine in seven shutout innings. The Brewers finally broke through in the ninth against Corey Knebel (0-1). Jace Peterson singled leading off and moved to third on Andrew McCutchen’s one-out single. Knebel, who saved 57 games in five seasons with the Brewers, then gave up Yelich’s sac fly to left field that scored Peterson. Lauer gave up five hits, walked one and threw 66 of 98 pitches for strikes but could not get his second win. He joined Teddy Higuera as the only left-handers in Brewers history to strike out 13 batters in a game.
Devin Williams (1-0) worked the eighth and Josh Hader finished for his eighth save.
Kyle Schwarber erupted in disgust about a called third strike against Hader and was ejected in the ninth by plate umpire Angel Hernandez. Schwarber slammed his bat, slammed his helmet and wildly gestured at Hernandez in a highlight-worthy meltdown before he was cheered off the field. Both teams had issues with Hernandez all game.
Brewers manager Craig Counsell called it “a consistently big zone.”
The Brewers head home for one game Monday against San Francisco. LHP Sam Long (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will start for San Francisco, and the Brewers send Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes (1-0, 2.37) to the mound. First pitch is at 5:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS. The teams will play the other two games of the originally scheduled series in a Sept. 8 doubleheader.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Reds beat the Cardinals 4-1 and the Pirates nipped the Cubs 4-3. The Brewers (10-6) and Cardinals (9-5) are tied for first in the division. The Pirates are two games back, the Cubs 3 and the Reds are seven games out.
Grayson Allen set playoff career highs with 27 points and six 3-pointers, Giannis Antetokounmpo had 32 points and 17 rebounds and the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Chicago Bulls 119-95 on Sunday to take a 3-1 lead in their first-round series. Jrue Holiday scored 26, and the Bucks made it look easy again after beating the Bulls by 30 and handing them the most lopsided home playoff loss in franchise history. The defending NBA champions led by 22 early in the third quarter and steadied themselves after a push by Chicago. They’ll try to wrap up the series in Milwaukee on Wednesday.
Allen delivered another huge effort off the bench, surpassing his previous postseason scoring high of 22 points in Game 3. He made 10 of 12 shots and nailed 6 of 7 3s, with Chicago fans booing just about every time he touched the ball. Antetokounmpo had seven assists.
Holiday made five 3s. Bobby Portis added 14 points and 10 rebounds in his second straight start with Khris Middleton sidelined because of a sprained left knee, and the Bucks beat the Bulls for the 19th time in 21 games.
Zach LaVine led Chicago with 24 points and 13 assists, DeMar DeRozan scored 23 and Patrick Williams finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Allen made 4 of 5 3-pointers and scored 16 as the Bucks grabbed a 56-41 halftime lead. Game 5 is Wednesday at Milwaukee.
On the PGA tour, the team of Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay led wire-to-wire to win the Zurich Classic to each notch their first wins of the 2021-22 season. They finished 29 under to win by two strokes over Sam Burns and Billy Horschel.
Ross Chastain only led one lap but it was the last lap as he won the GEICO 500 at Talladga Superspeedway Sunday to secure his second NASCAR Cup Series victory. Chastain was running third behind Erik Jones and Kyle Larson with one lap remaining. Larson pulled out of line to the outside, poised to make a pass for the lead. But Jones pulled in front of Larson to block the momentum while Chastain kept his No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet steady below them maintaining pace, ultimately pulling away to the win as the other two cars lost momentum battling each other. Austin Dillon finished second, followed by Kyle Busch, Larson and Martin Truex Jr. to round out the top five.
