Sports for Wednesday
Andrew McCutchen hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning, Devin Williams pitched out of his own jam in the eighth, and the Milwaukee Brewers held on for a 5-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night.
Cedric Mullins hit a grand slam for Baltimore.
After being shut out in two of their first four games, the Brewers improved at the plate. Williams nearly gave the game away by allowing a single and two walks to load the bases with nobody out in the eighth. The right-hander recovered, however, striking out Chris Owings, Jorge Mateo and pinch-hitter Ryan McKenna to end the inning and keep Milwaukee ahead by a run.
Then closer Josh Hader had his own problems in the ninth, allowing a leadoff double by Mullins before eventually retiring Ramón Urías on a flyball with two on and two out for his second save.
McCutchen had three RBIs, and Willy Adames scored three runs for the Brewers.
Hoby Milner (1-0) earned his first big league win, part of the 4 2/3 scoreless innings thrown by the Milwaukee bullpen.
Félix Bautista (0-1) allowed a one-out double by Adames in the seventh. Cionel Pérez retired Christian Yelich on a grounder before McCutchen’s sharp single put Milwaukee ahead.
Eric Lauer allowed the second-inning grand slam by Mullins, but he retired eight of his last nine batters after that. He yielded three earned runs and three hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Milwaukee RHP Corbin Burnes (0-0) faces LHP John Means (0-0) in the series finale tonight, a matchup between each team’s opening day starter. First pitch is at 6:05 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central on Tuesday, the Guardians beat the Reds 10-5, the Cubs nipped the Pirates 2-1 and the Cardinals edged the Royals 6-5.
Former Green Bay Phoenix guard Kamari McGee isn’t going far. The Horizon League All-Freshman selection announced on Tuesday he’s heading south to play for the Wisconsin Badgers. McGee, a Racine St. Catherine’s product, averaged 11.6 points per game as a freshman for the Phoenix this past season. With his career high of 24 points coming against Wright State back on February 9th. A performance that helped him secure one of three Horizon League Freshman of the Week honors. McGee entered the transfer portal back on April 4th, and was also contacted by Minnesota, BYU, Bradley, and UC-Davis according to a report by 247 Sports. He will have three years of eligibility left with the Badgers.
Alyssa Nakken broke another historic barrier on Tuesday night, becoming the first woman to coach on the field in a Major League game in the Giants’ 13-2 victory over the Padres at Oracle Park.
Nakken took over as the Giants’ first-base coach in the top of the third inning after Antoan Richardson was ejected from the game by crew chief Greg Gibson following a dispute with Padres third-base coach Mike Shildt. Nakken said bench coach Kai Correa came down to the batting cages and told her she would be replacing Richardson. And so she made her on-field coaching debut with the Giants, who originally hired the 31-year-old as an assistant coach in January 2020.
In the NBA Play-In Tournament on Tuesday, Brooklyn beat Cleveland 115-108 and Minnesota defeated the LA Clippers 109-104. Tonight, Charlotte plays at Atlanta and San Antonio is at New Orleans.
