Sports for Monday

Mike Brosseau’s first career pinch-hit homer snapped a tie in the seventh inning, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 5-4 on Sunday for their first victory of the season. Willy Adames and Rowdy Tellez also went deep, helping the reigning NL Central champions overcome a shaky performance by Freddy Peralta. Christian Yelich had two hits and drove in a run.  After Brosseau connected, Milwaukee’s vaunted bullpen took over.

Brad Boxberger (1-0) worked the seventh, stranding a runner on third when Jonathan Villar was retired on a close call at first base that was upheld by a replay review. Devin Williams then got three outs before Josh Hader pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save.

Seiya Suzuki hit his first major league homer for Chicago, and Marcus Stroman pitched five effective innings in his Cubs debut. The Cubs were trying to go 3-0 for the first time since 2016.

With two outs and runners on first and second in the first, Suzuki drove a 3-1 pitch from Peralta deep to center field. Suzuki, who signed an $85 million, five-year contract with the Cubs last month, also had three RBIs during Saturday’s 9-0 win.

Stroman, who finalized a $71 million, three-year contract with Chicago on Dec. 1, allowed one run and two hits. The right-hander struck out three and walked three.  Stroman exited with a 3-1 lead, but the Brewers jumped all over Jesse Chavez in the sixth. Yelich doubled home Adames, and Tellez hit a one-out drive to right-center for his first homer of the season.

Peralta, who went 10-5 with a 2.81 ERA for Milwaukee last year, allowed three hits, struck out six and walked four in four innings.  It was a tough opening series for the Brewers’ front three starters of Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff and Peralta. They yielded 13 earned runs and 10 walks in 12 2/3 innings.

RHP Adrian Houser starts Monday for the Brewrs at Baltimore. Houser went 10-6 with a 3.22 ERA in 28 appearances last year. LHP Bruce Zimmermann pitches for the Orioles in their home opener.  First pitch is at 2:05 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

The Milwaukee Bucks closed out the regular season at Cleveland Sunday with a loss to the 133-115 loss to the Cavaliers.  Jrue Holiday was the only Bucks starter, who played briefly, as Milwaukee rested its’starters in preparation for the playoffs, which start this week.   Former Wisconsin Herd standout Rayjon Tucker was one of five players in double figures for Milwaukee and finished with 15 points.   Tucker hit all three of his three-point attempts and was 5 of seven from the field.  Milwaukee 51-31), which finished tied for the second with the Celtics and 76ers, will open their playoff run Sunday at home against the Bulls.  The Bucks were seeded third last year when the won the NBA Championship.

Two months after Scottie Scheffler finally broke through for his first PGA Tour victory, he capped off a most incredible 56-day stretch by making his fourth win the biggest of them all, the Masters by three shots over Rory McIlroy for his first major.

“I never made it this far. It was just a dream of being here and competing,” Scheffler said in Butler Cabin, moments before Hideki Matsuyama helped him into the green jacket. “I can’t put into words what it means that I’ll be able to come back here for a lifetime.”

The only stumble came at the end when Scheffler needed four putts from 40 feet before he could claim his first major, and that only mattered in the record book.  The number one player in the world closed with a 1-under 71 for a three-shot victory over McIlroy, who holed out from the bunker on the final hole for a record-tying final round of 64.  Cameron Smith closed with a 73 and tied for third with Shane Lowry, who birdied the 18th for a 69.

The Timber Rattlers battled back to split Sunday’s twin bill with Peoria at Fox Cities Stadium, losing the first game 1-0 but winning the second game, 3-2.   A pitchers duel broke out in game one. Brandon Knarr allowed just two hits in 5.2 innings of work, and struck out five Chiefs in the process. Peoria did not have their first hit until the fifth inning, which came back to bite Knarr and the Timber Rattlers.

With runners on first and second, Francisco Hernandez hit into a fielders choice with Zavier Warren electing to go home on a bouncer to third baseman. After a brief rundown,, and a throw over to second base by catcher Darrien Miller, Matt Chamberlain came around to score the lone run of the game.

Wisconsin jumped out to an early lead in game two, but found themselves down 2-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh.

A base hit by Tyler Black drove in Yeison Coca and Sal Frelick for the Timber Rattlers second walk-off winner of the weekend.

The Midwest Conference leading Lawrence Vikings scored early and often in game one as they cruised to a 23-12 win over Illinois College.

Jacob Charon continues to rake for the Vikings. Posting two more home runs on Sunday, and four RBIs in game one alone. Second baseman Taylor Freeman drove in four runs in game one as well with a homer against Illinois College.

Back to back home runs by Charon and Zach Leslie in the fifth inning helped lift the Vikings to a 7-4 victory in game two.

Ripon College had its game with Carthage Sunday postponed.  The Red Hawks, 9-8 overall and 5-3 in the conference, host Lawrence Tuesday at Francis Field.

UW-Oshkosh won three of four games with Stout over the weekend.  The Titans won a doubleheader Saturday, 11-2 and 13-4.  On Sunday Oshkosh won the first game 5-3 but lost the second, 12-5.   The Titans are 10-10 overall and 5-5 in the conference.

In college softball Saturday, Ripon College lost a doubleheader at Monmouth 6-5 and 8-6.  Ripon lost Sunday at Cornell College 4-2 and 4-0 to drop to 3-19 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.
