Mobile Home Explodes In Marinette County

A Milwaukee couple in their 50s was severely burned when the mobile home they were inside of in Marinette County exploded Sunday morning. Marinette County Dispatch received a call just before 9 am about the large explosion at a residence on Payette Road at Bombers Road in the Town of Niagara. The man and the woman were taken to Dickinson Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain and were later transferred to another hospital in Wisconsin. The male victim told first responders he was trying to light a propane furnace that had gone out. The mobile home was a total loss and a garage and its contents were severely damaged. Foul play is not suspected.

Porch Fire In FDL

Fond du Lac firefighters responded to what was reported as a house fire shortly after 1:30 Sunday afternoon at 284 North Park Avenue. The fire was contained to the front porch. A resident tried to extinguish it and it was still smoldering. Fire Department officials say it appears the fire was caused by discarded smoking materials. No injuries were reported. Fond du Lac Police handled traffic at the scene.

Motorized Skateboarding Accident Claims Columbus Man’s Life

Police in Columbus say a 26-year-old Columbus man died following a motorized skateboarding accident Saturday night. The man was riding the skateboard in the 700 block of Fuller Street when he lost control and crashed.  Lifesaving efforts were begun immediately. A UW Hospitals’ Med Flight helicopter responded. A doctor with the helicopter crew pronounced the man dead at the scene. The man was not wearing a helmet and no one else was involved in the accident. Police are continuing their investigation.

Town Of Ripon Attempted Break Ins

Town of Ripon Police are asking residents to be proactive and lock their doors and vehicles. They say in recent weeks they’ve received reports of attempted break-ins. They also recommend not leaving valuables in your vehicles and reporting any suspicious activity to police.

Algoma Boulevard Closure In Oshkosh

City officials in Oshkosh tell us Algoma Boulevard between Wisconsin Street and West New York Avenue will be closed to thru traffic beginning Wednesday for sanitary sewer, water main, and storm sewer construction. High Avenue from Osceola Street and West New York Avenue will temporarily have two-way traffic for access during the closure. This phase of construction is anticipated to last until October 28th. The closures are required to complete the work within the road right-of-way in a safe manner that protects City’s contractor’s employees and the traveling public. Signs have been posted on the Project route to notify motorists of the upcoming roadway closure.

Herb Kohl Foundation Awards

The selection committee for the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Student Scholarship, Teacher Fellowship and Principal Leadership program recently announced recipients of the 291 Herb Kohl Foundation awards for Wisconsin students, teachers and principals. Awards of $6,000 are being made to 100 teachers, 17 principals, and their schools, and $10,000 scholarships will be given to 174 graduating high school students. The Kohl Foundation award program was established by Herb Kohl. Since 1990, the foundation has awarded more than $28.3 million to Wisconsin educators, principals, students and schools. Kohl says, “Education is the key to the future of Wisconsin and our nation.” Award recipients were notified of their awards last Wednesday.

Boys And Girls Clubs Second Annual Bed Build Coming Up

The Boys & Girls Club of the Tri-County Area will be participating in their second annual Bed Build on May 14th. Ashley Bartol of the Club says it’s something they do in conjunction with the Sleep in Heavenly Peace program that supplies beds built by volunteers to children in need. She says their goal is to build 25 beds in honor of the club’s 25th anniversary and deliver them that same day. They will need 40 to 60 volunteers to accomplish that. She says they will post information on their Facebook page to get the volunteers they need. Bartol says one of their board members, Craig Johnson, works with Drexel Building Supply which sometimes supplies the lumber for Sleep in Heavenly Peace’s bed builds and that’s how they found out about the program.

United Way Campaign Preparation

The Ripon Area United Way’s annual campaign wrapped up at the end of last month, but it won’t be long before preparation begins for the next fundraising effort. The United Way reached their $80,000 goal which will help out 16 agencies or programs that provide services to the community. United Way Board President Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says in a couple of months they will meet with organizations they provide funding to so they can determine how much to raise in the next campaign. The goal will be set by mid-summer and the next campaign will be launched in late summer or early fall. He says every one of the organizations they support provides a service to someone in need or fills an educational need.

The Great American Trailer Park Musical

A visiting professor from Ohio State University will direct this month’s musical comedy at Ripon College. Lillian Brown is the Faculty Fellow Visiting Professor of Theatre for Ripon College. Brown says “The Great American Trailer Park Musical” is about a stripper on the run who takes refuge from her crazy ex-boyfriend in a trailer park in Florida where she has an affair with a married tenant. She admits the drama has a touch of “Jerry Spring” in it. The musical will be performed by a talented cast of Ripon College students April 27th through the 30th at the Benstead Theatre in the C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts at 7:30 pm. The doors open at 7 pm each evening. Admission is free but reservations are recommended by calling 920-748-8741 or email boxoffice@ripon.edu
