FDL County Executive Buechel Tributes

Fond du Lac County Board Chairperson Marty Farrell worked with County Executive Al Buechel as a board member or county chairperson during Buechel’s entire 29 years with the county. He came to appreciate the late county executive’s ability to compromise and work with people for the best interest of the county. Ripon Senior Activity Center Executive Director Noreen Johnson says center directors across the county appreciated what he did on behalf of the county’s senior citizens, being 74-years-old Buechel was a senior himself. Fond du Lac Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says Buechel was a “wonderful person and friend.” Prior to becoming Fond du Lac County Executive in 1993 Buechel served on the county board for 17 years.

Impact Beyond FDL County

Fond du Lac County Executive Al Buechel’s impact on the county extended beyond its geographical borders. Buechel died over the weekend at the age of 74. State Senator Joan Ballweg says Buechel attended numerous events, but also served on a number of boards on the state level having an impact on legislation and helping craft programs for the county that served as models for the state. Fond du Lac County Board Chairperson Marty Farrell has served on the county board since 1992. Buechel began serving as County Executive the following year. Before that Buechel served on the county board for 17 years, but prior to that worked in retail at the Sear’s store in the Forest Mall in Fond du Lac. Farrell says Buechel took a couple lessons away from that and applied them to how he worked with people at the county level. Farrell says he understood how to run an efficient business and how to meet peoples’ needs. Fond du Lac County Emergency Management Director Bobbi Hicken says Buechel was “an amazing man and lived for his service to Fond du Lac County.”

Special Election For FDL County Executive

Fond du Lac County will hold a special election to select the next County Executive to fill out the nearly three years remaining in the term for Allen Buechel who passed away over the weekend at the age of 74. The County Board has scheduled a special meeting at 6 pm tomorrow night to make the June 7th special election official. If a primary is needed it would be held in May. Meanwhile County Board Chairperson Marty Farrell will also be the Acting County Executive. Since his term ends next month Farrell will ask the County Board to appoint an Acting County Executive before the special election.
