The NFL Draft will not be coming to Green Bay in 2024. That’s after the league announced Detroit as the host on Monday.
Green Bay was one of the three finalists to host. Along with Washington D.C. and Detroit, Mich., with the Motor City’s bid ultimately being chosen.
“The Draft has become a prominent offseason event across the country, and we are excited to work with the Lions and their partners to bring the 2024 NFL Draft to the Motor City,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a release from the league. “With the help of Visit Detroit, the Detroit Sports Commission, and the City of Detroit the Lions passionate fan base and all visitors will be treated to an incredible three-day experience.”
The Packers have poured resources into the areas around Lambeau Field in recent years in the hopes of hosting events like the Big Ten Championship Game, and the NFL Draft. An effort that will continue after missing out on their latest bid to host one of the league’s premiere events.
Sites for upcoming NFL Drafts now include: Las Vegas (2022), Kansas City (2023), and Detroit (2024).
Packers GM Brian Gutekunst met the media for the first time on Monday since trading Davante Adams to the Raiders. Gutekunst knew things were headed in this direction after talking to the All-Pro receiver after the season. The Packers re-cooped 1st and 2nd-round draft picks in return for Adams. But also got much-needed cap space.
“Davante deserved a lot of respect as we went through this process,” Gutekunst said. “And we felt we gave that to him. We were very straightforward and honest with the communication through all of it. As we got through it into free agency as we were moving on with that cap number, if we continued on the road we were, it would have been very difficult to put the team we wanted to put around Aaron (Rodgers) and everybody. (Adams) is a special player, special man, and we will miss him. To get something back that could help our football team was very important. You never really replace a guy like Davante Adams. It’s going to be more cumulative with how the whole team steps up and plays.”
In Cactus League baseball on Monday the Brewers beat the Giants at Maryvale 5-2. Right-hander Corbin Burnes made his second spring start and looked sharp in picking up his first win (1-0). He went five innings giving up one run on one hit while striking out eight and walking one. Brent Suter picked up his first save as he pitched the ninth inning. Willy Adames hit a two-run homer in the second off Giants starter Logan Webb (0-1) who took the loss. Roudy Tellez hit a two-run homer in the fourth, his first of the spring, to finish off Webb.
In the NBA tonight the Bucks are at Philadelphia against the 76ers. Milwaukee is coming off a 127-102 loss against Memphis Saturday night. The Bucks (46-28) are tied with the 76ers for second in the Eastern Conference, a game behind the Miami Heat.
Roncalli’s Joe Garceau has been named the Associated Press Coach of the Year after leading the Jets to a Division 4 state championship.
The Jets knocked off top seeded Milwaukee Academy of Science 55-45 at the Kohl Center back on March 19th. It’s the second state championship in program history with both gold balls coming with Garceau as head coach. The first coming back in 2018. Six other coaches were nominated for the honor this year, including Neenah’s Lee Rabas.
There were no first team selections from northeast Wisconsin this year. Kimberly’s Jackson Paveletzke was named to the AP All-State second team. Roncalil’s Luke Pautz and Ashwaubenon’s Marcus Tomashek were named to the third team. Chevalier Emery Junior from the Division One state champion Neenah Rockets was named to the fourth team by the associated press.
The UW-Oshkosh gymnastics team received a warm welcome Monday, returning home from New York after winning the team title at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Championship over the weekend.
