2/19/22 White Out Conditions Create Havoc
19 February 2022 News
White out conditions and a snow squall Friday evening created havoc on the roads and on the ice. The State Patrol says 39 vehicles were involved in a pileup on US Highway 51 southbound north of County Road K in Marathon County at 4:10 pm. Ten people were injured with some being transported to area hospitals and others finding their own means of transportation. High winds and falling snow created near whiteout conditions. The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office responded to eight calls Friday night for cars in the ditch and several more that were disabled. The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office says they and other agencies responded to 14 ice rescues on Lake Winnebago and Lake Butte des Morts and Lake Poygan bringing 25 people back to shore. Three were treated for exposure and released. Eight vehicles were submerged or partially submerged, 2 ATVs were brought back to shore, and one ice fishing shanty collapsed under the heavy winds.
