Sports for February 8th

Former Las Vegas Raiders interim coach Rich Bisaccia will be next in line to coach the Green Bay Packers’ special teams, according to a report. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network cited unnamed sources in reporting the Packers’ plans to hire Bisaccia. Bisaccia has more than three decades of experience coaching special teams at the pro and college levels. He has been a special teams coach for the Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, San Diego Chargers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Bisaccia went 7-5 as interim head coach after Jon Gruden was fired last fall. The Packers are looking for a replacement for Maurice Drayton, who was fired over the weekend. The Packers’ yearlong issues with special teams came to a head in the playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The Packers had a field goal blocked and a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown in the 13-10 loss.

In the NBA Tuesday night the Bucks continue their west coast road trip at Los Angeles against the Lakers. Milwaukee (34-21) is tied for second in the Eastern Conference with the Bulls, a half-game behind the Heat while the Lakers (26-28).

In men’s college basketball Tuesday night, #14 Wisconsin is at #17 Michigan State. Tipoff is at 6:00.

Auburn remained No. 1 in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll for the third straight week, while Texas Tech cracked the top 10 and Murray State joined the rankings for the first time in nearly seven years.

Bruce Pearl’s Tigers earned 48 of 61 first-place votes to stay ahead of Gonzaga, which earned the other 13 votes and has sat at No. 2 throughout Auburn’s first stay at the top.

Auburn (22-1) has won 19 straight games since losing in double overtime to Connecticut in November, including all 10 of its Southeastern Conference games. Mark Few’s Bulldogs (19-2) have won 12 straight since falling to Alabama in early December.

Purdue climbed a spot to No. 3, followed by Arizona in the Wildcats’ second stint inside the top five this season. Kentucky and Houston were next.

Duke rose two spots to No. 7 after a lopsided win at rival North Carolina in retiring Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski’s final visit to Chapel Hill, followed by Kansas, Texas Tech and reigning national champion Baylor to round out the top 10.

The Red Raiders made their first appearance inside the top 10 under first-year coach Mark Adams, who took over when Chris Beard left for Texas. Texas Tech jumped five spots after beating the Longhorns and West Virginia last week.

Providence rose four spots to No. 11 — its highest ranking since the 2015-16 season — followed by UCLA, which took the week’s biggest tumble of nine spots after losses to Arizona and a seven-win Arizona State team.

Marquette had the biggest jump, rising six spots to No. 18 under first-year coach Shaka Smart after beating Villanova. Wisconsin fell three spots to No. 14 after a loss to Illinois and a close win over Penn State.

No. 22 Saint Mary’s and No. 23 Murray State were the week’s new additions. The Gaels’ poll appearance is their first in two years, while the Racers are in the poll for the first time since spending a week at No. 25 in March 2015.  Iowa State and LSU fell out from last week’s rankings.

Lovie Smith is heading back to a head coach’s seat in the NFL.  The Houston Texans have agreed to a deal with Smith to be the team’s new head coach, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo reported Monday.  It’s Smith’s third go-around as an NFL head coach after spending nine seasons in Chicago and two in Tampa, and his first as the head man since spending 2016-2020 as the University of Illinois head coach. The Texans later confirmed the hire and also announced that Pep Hamilton has been promoted to offensive coordinator. Frank Ross has been retained as special teams coordinator.

New Orleans is hiring defensive coordinator Dennis Allen as the ranchise’s next coach, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday.  Rapoport later reported Monday evening that Allen and the Saints had agreed to terms.  Allen was one of a number of candidates to interview for the opening created by the departure of Sean Payton. Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, former Dolphins coach Brian Flores and Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn were also among those vying for the job.
